mud / dh tyre

I'm after a good winter tyre that'll shed mud and grip in abusive situations... berms, doubles, hips etc. The local riding is wooded so roots and puddles will be de rigueur. I'd normally just leave Highrollers on all year round but this year I'm after a dedicated tyre.
Looking at Maxxis Medusa (very cheap) / swampthing or alternatives. What do you recommend?
oh, and 2.3
edit - looks like maxxis don't make the medusa in 2.3, so Swampthing from their range vs....

conti's new mud king is available in a 2.3, and the 2,3 baron is a great allrounder, expensive admittedly though. schwalbe's dirty dan might be worth a look, not sure what size it is though, the 2.0 version is a great winter tyre0

I've still got those wet screams I took to Scotland if you're interested? never been fitted, 2.2s though I can't recommend them as I've never used them. But others recommend them!Santa Cruz 5010C

hmm, thanks for the offer Howard, think the Wet Screams might be over knobbly and under width... I think Yeehaa once said they were design for Morzine in the wet which just obliterates any other rubber. I'll let you know if interested though.
When are you hitting Wharncliffe next?0 -
Lawman - the dirty dan looks good0

Quiet liking the look and price of the Bronson0

Bontrager Mud X been on my front wheel all year up until I did the Manx E2E, ride in the muddy dirty Ochils and Central Scotland in general, found it great when the going gets wet and shitty but the tyre moves around a lot when you find yourself on something firm, which feels weird.0
-
Mud x only goes up to a 2.0 otherwise it would be a strong contender as it's been name dropped quite a bit recently.
Looks like it's going to be a Swampthing 2.35 but I've not hit the button yet0 -
For proper hard use- actual downhill- stay away from all the XC options, simply not suitable... Go directly to a 2.5 Swampie (not actually 2.5 of course, it's an old maxxis so they were measured by a blind man with a broken ruler on a galloping horse), or maybe a Specialized Hillbilly (it's a pre-cut-down spike, haven't used one but they look ideal), or a cut spike. But don't use a full-on spike like a Wetscream, they wear like mad but also they rip the hell out of the trails, not good.
For everyday hard use, the 2.35 Swampthing, supertacky on the front, maxxpro on the rear. Though they're like riding with the brakes on!Uncompromising extremist0 -
Muddy Mary. Possibly a Dirty Dan on the front if it get's really wet, but the MM's should see you through most conditions. Try the Vertstar compound too...0
-
yeah, pretty much my sentiments - I think I'm going with the 2.5 Swampie as I'm running a spesh 2.3 which can't handle the course. I know there's more to a tyres ruggedness than width, such as dual/single ply but unless they're tested side by side, I dont think it's easy to tell. So I'm going big. Spotted a couple of second hands too.0
-
2.5 swampie is even more ridiculously undersized than the average Maxxis tbh, chances are it'll be smaller than your 2.3 Spesh.Uncompromising extremist0
-
2.5" swampthing supertackies are incredibly grippy. But, they drag like hell if it's not properly swamplike, and they REALLY aren't anywhere hear a 2.5" width.0
-
Yeah, the sizing is a bit odd which is why I went up to 2.5. My 2.4 Conti seems huge compared to the 2.3HRs... And I've gone for the non-supertacky version (60a compound) to keep the drag reasonable for a rather flat DH course. Can't wait - fingers crossed it's here for a Sunday thrashing. COMMON CRC!!0

What the hell is "a rather flat DH course"?0

If you were riding a children's gokart down a hill would you call that bobsleighing, because it's the closest thing you have to it, too?0
-
If she's chubby and you're not enjoying it, you still call it sex. So yeah, I'd call it bobselighing.0

You could involve all the purchasable products that make such lonesome-love an experience closer to the real deal, the only thing missing is the hot sweat. But yes, you'd be in denail to call anything other than self-harm. This DH course has everything a DH course should have - wall rides, hip jumps, doubles, rock gardens, gaps. The thing it's lacking is elevation... It's about 70feet :shock:0

I would probably be really good at DH but only lack one thing - balls.I don't do smileys.
