hi, over the summer i had a fall during a training session and resulted in the shifter for the front gears to break ( i somehow was able to pull broken plastic out of inside of the brake/shifter. I currentley have shimano sora's, and would it make any difference if id just upgrade the shifters? also would my derailleur also sora be compatible with say shimano 105 with the gear lever along side the brake lever?
also wondering off abit, whats the best way of loosing weight on a bike. I have a standard 2010 giant defy 3.

The number of gears on the cassette must be the same as the number of gears in the shifter. Modern 105 is 10 spd, your Sora is either 8 or 9, depending on the year. If it's 9, you could look at Tiagra.
As for losing weight - start with wheels and tyres. I'd also heard a diet can lose a huge amount of weight for free....FTT

ok im looking at tiagra now.
what wheels would you look at probably 250 max. would you get any good wheels for that amount? compared to stock defy wheels

Only the left shifter is broken, you say?
If you're only looking for a left hand shifter, any of the Shimano units will be fine.
If you're also doing the right hand shifter, you'll also need a new cassette and a new chain to make the switch to 10-speed.
If you're going to throw £250 at this hobby then I'd recommend a bike fit rather than a new pair of wheels (unless you've either already had one or your wheels require replacement).- - - - - - - - - -

Mavic aksiums can be had for about 150 pounds. They are well built, roll well and will be a good upgrade over the basic wheels you have. Kit them out with top quality continental gp4000s tyres and you'll have change from £250.0

Ultegra 6700 wheels can be had for under £250 (Merlin usually)Jens says "Shut up legs !! "
