Carbon 456 (yes another) early beginnings of a build thread

My 30th is coming up this year and I managed to wangle a new bike from the mrs. So, back in June I bought a paint seconds 456 frame:

However, the wife wouldn't let me ride it until my birthday in October, we then found out she was pregnant and the whole of upstairs therefore needed redecorating :( So, the frame has sat in my wardrobe for the last few months.

Roll forward to now...the mrs is still being gay and not letting me build/ ride it until the end of october. I have so little time at the moment that I don't mind though and it's only just over a month away now. Just got the hallway and spare room to decorate now and we're all good.

Anyway, on with the bike.

So, I got the 18" frame from On-One and it sat in my wardrobe for the last few months as mentioned. Last week On-One advertised that they were selling the matt black frame for £299...the same price as I paid for my paint seconds one three months ago. Well, I was a little gutted as i'd always wanted a 20", but they had sold out so went for an 18". It was the same size as my old GT, so knew it would fit, but think the 20" would be better suited.

A cheeky email was sent to On-One, with a cherry on top and all that, asking them if they'd exchange it. The frame had never been used, and was exactly as it left their shop. They agreed, massive big up to On-One there!!!!! So, a quick trip to sheffield and I am now the owner of this: (for not a penny extra...except my diesel costs)

I am in looooooove. The matt black looks so good!

Over the past few months i've also been slowly buying a few bits, and here's what I currently have: (I'm going for a 1x9 setup in case you hadn't guessed)

What I don't have here is getting swapped over from my old bike (wheels, brakes, cranks, forks (which will be next upgrade), cockpit and saddle). I'll get plenty of pics when I start building it, which won't be for a while yet...just too much damn decorating. Unfortunately the donor bits won't be as high spec, but will get replaced when the wife isn't looking But i've got a good base to start from.

I'm beginning to get excited though. Only about 5 weeks now!!!!! :D:D:D

It's gonna look lovely, I had one for 6 months, really enjoyed it! :) Sadly, I've got a bit of a borked back, so had to go back to FS (this is in no way due to the c456 by the way!!) The guys at On One are great though, really friendly chaps!

What is it about bloody wives and girlfriends ruling our lives!?! I asked the o/h if I could get another bike, and keep it indoors as the shed is full.. she gave the standard death stare :(

Looking forward to seeing the finished build :D

Oh no doubt i'm whipped! But...to be fair the house does need decorating before kid no.2 comes along in 9 weeks! Mental!!!

Thanks for the comments, I can't wait to get it built.

I have also asked if I can hang the bike in the landing above the stairs, I got the death stare and laughed at...all at the same time.

  • just a heads up that cassette the pg70 does have rather short lived high gears, as i found my smaller cogs tended to last no more than 2-3 months tops, while the bigger ones tended to last a lot longer.

nice build so far be interested to see how it goes

Cheers mate, i'll keep an eye out for that then! I decided on a new one, as I was getting a new chain and the single chainring, so thought i'd finish the drivetrain off with a cassette. Plus, my current bike slips every now and again and I always suspected it was the cassette.

Oh, I also got one of these here I think the stock picture will do. :) Most chainstay protectors i've seen won't go around the mammoth chainstay on the 456.

Looking forward to seeing the end results, As for chain stay protection i used Framewrap on mine and it works well

I've always used innertubes for mine, and had success. I quite liked the look of the lezyne one, and had seen another 456 with one on, so decided to give it a try.

Using an inner-tube on my C456, looks great on the matte black; much cheaper and more durable than those neoprene protectors.

Very happy with my C456, although in need of a deep clean after a very wet night ride (got covered in wet sandy grit and wasn't sounding healthy at all) at Thetford last night!
