Ive ridden MTB's for years and have had my lovely little allez since june, ive been riding it quite alot and seem to have avoided the 'bug in mouth' thing so far. Until thursday. And today. Bloody thing flew straight into my mouth and i procceded to roll it round in my mouth until i could spit it out. Wasnt a nice texture i can tell ya!

Then today i had one up the nose, one in the ear and one straight down the throat. Joy!

Worst is a (stinging) insect in the helmet vent on a fast downhill!

PS the worst is accidentally squashing a big fat slug and feeling it's entrails spatter onto the shins!

Why spit it out? Saves a gel. :)

racing a friend down a long descent at about 35mph. Two direct bug hits to the right eye. had to stop (due to crying/lack of visibility) to the amusement of my buddy who verified two flies independently stuck to my eyeball.

I also hate it when you actually breathe them in - not just swallow them...they never appear again - I worry for the state of my lungs. THere is a sewage works I cycle past on my commute and it is always worrying dense with this sort of suicidal fly.

Bugs in the eye are awful, so I always have my trsty Oakleys on, you hear bugs bouncing off the lenses!

Bugs in the mouth, not swallowed any this year, when you do, they're in and gone before you know it!

    Isn't that for hayfever?
  • I was stung by a bee/wasp which hit me @rse end on the lip during a fast club ride. Bottom lip doubled in size, but had reduced again by the end of the ride.

Same week Cancellara gets stung on a ride and ends up in hospital ...Spartacus eh?

Had the summer flu on my birthday but still rode into work. Managed to survive the day only to find that someone had slit both of my tyres open. Had to push the bike 5 miles home and the cherry on the pie was the wasp which flew into my mouth and stung my tongue on the way home. Was not the most fun I've ever had on my birthday.

Going downhill at +40mph on a recent visit to Arran. A bug hit my helmet (not that one) and I actually felt a bit of recoil, god knows what the bug felt?? Checked my lid at the bottom and had a nice 'splatter' residue of what was presumably an ex-wasp. One of the first things to learn when cycling in summer - keep your mouth shut. :D

  • I don't really notice bugs that much any more (try and close your mouth when you see clouds of them!), but some do really taste awful. I went for a ride in Dartmoor a fell months back, really hot day, after some rain and they really were out in force (I wish I had worn insect repellent).

Oh and is it me or are big flies more suicidal these days? I seem to have something massive hit my sun glasses virtually every ride..

I had a bee/wasp in my helmet last week, It's suprising how fast you can stop and take it off!
  • in manchester about ten years ago i was out and about on a nice sunny Saturday afternoon. i was on my way to a friends house to meet up for a ride, i was at a set of lights near his house when i felt a sting on my knee, then another and then my shoulder got it too. I leapt off my bike and then proceeded to jump around and shake myself like a Tina Turner tribute act.

I sustained 3 bee stings on my right knee and 3 stings to my left shoulder area. it turns out the little b@*%ards realy liked the smell of my sunblock

Cycling back (very hungover) from an old friend's house on Sunday morning. Hit the first really fast descent: wasp stung me 3 times on the shoulder. Unpleasant. Still, there are worse things that could happen.
