So what is "light" for a decent HT MTB?

I'm curious, since my hopper to me feels really light, yet I know its a (relatively) low-end bike, what would the higher end hardtails weigh in at?

I weighed it out of interest and with all the current bits on it comes in at 12kg... to me thats pretty light but to some of you guys its probably a real bloater :D

I do have really heavy pedals though (If I was to believe what I've read)

Depends what it is designed for, price and frame materials.V braked budget bikes often weigh less than disc brake budget bikes. Single speed bikes weigh less.
  • Yeah fair enough... suppose theres just too many variables...

Don't think I'd actually want mine much lighter, I imagine it would start to feel a bit fragile and unsafe :D
  • Father in law has a hardtail with 120mm forks, and it weighs in at just under 10kg. He's thrown tons of money at it, but in my opinion the weight savings really weren't worth the price.

I had a hardtail Cube at about 11,4kg, and that was light enough.

i reckon around the 10-11kg mark is best for hardtails, mine is just over 11kgs with 140mm forks, but a mates xc hardtail is well under 10kgs, depends what you want it for, as you say, there are far too many variables
  • My Kona Kula was on the 11.5Kg mark, not shabby for an out of the box weight

boardman pro ht 120mm forks large frame fue upgrades near enough 11.5kg (£1k bike)

friend has a carbon custom race bike like the type with no seatpost (built as part of the frame) stem and bars all in 1 carbon, carbon rims, 140mm forks, carbon chainset his is about 9kg. Not entirely sure exact weight but belive its about £8k bike. ive riden it and i have to say climbing is effortless but downhill i hate it jumps all over the place guess its a thing you would get use to.

I rode with a guy on one of the Whyte team race bikes, 17lbs (or 7.7kg) apparently

That's at the far end of mental territory though. I'd be happy with HT around 24-25lbs/11kg. No idea what mine weighs actually.

    My FS weighs 8.9kg :-)

I reckon under 23lbs is light, under 20 is very light.

If true that is bloody impressive, given that the UCI minimum weight for road bikes is 6.8kgs.

Add in suspension forks, disc brakes, knobblie tyres and hopefully a bit more strength...

Lightest I've weighed personally was a Cannondale Flash Team, which was 18 and a bit pounds. I did weigh one of the Whyte team bikes and it wasn't that light, but the one above could've been a 'special' one. Look on Light Bikes, there's an 11lb Scale...

my Scale was 9kgs bang on

could have ventured into 8kgs territory easily with some XTR/XX and tubeless

    brilliant for climbing

Just found this... Very impressive! Looks nice too.

My carbon XTC weights in at around 19lbs. Could be a fair bit lighter but it was never the purpose of the bike, was just meant to be a winter hack!

Like you say, *if*. I was told it weighed 17lbs, I picked it up and almost hit myself in the face because it was so light, much lighter than my road bike. You know when you think a box is full of something heavy, but it's actually empty....it was like that!

As for the road bike comparison, plenty of road bikes are under the limit, they either add ballast low down or make up the difference with Garmins, powertaps.....motors.....

That 11lb Scale is just an exercise in 'it can be done' - the bike is pretty ridiculous! No damping in the forks, carbon chainrings and cassette, 80kg limit on the rims (and some other parts).

I had my Rocky ridge down to 11.5 kg, rather impressive as the standard weight is 13.5kg's. My Commencal skin hardtail is 9 kg built up from every bargain I could find on the web for £1800.
I think around the 10.5 to 11.5kg is a good weight for an aluminium framed XC bike.

  • My scale is down to about 8.5-9kg's now, and I ride that over most things, any trail centre black route is fine, and it copes well! No daft light parts either! At one point had it down in the low 7's but it was horrid, realy flexy wheels+bars etc and the god awful DT Swiss XRC 100 forks, realy nasty to ride! As it is now it's pretty sweet. I'm not a light guy either at 95kg's! Didn't come cheap mind you, to be honest anything bellow 10kg's is more of a look at what I've done exersize as I can't justify the extra cost vs the weight loss.

whats worrying about that scale is if he swapped the frame for the newer 899 model which would save a good 150g... which would put it under 10.5lbs let alone kg

but on a more down to earth note, i reckon the sweet spot for a hardtail suitable for me would be around the 22lbs mark, with 140mm forks and a nice slack front end, and around 24-25 for a 150mm fs bike with similar kit, i have been tempted to put most of the stuff from the HD on my maxlight, by my reckoning it would come out bang on 22.5lbs...

Depends so much on what you want it to do. My BFe was light considering its massively strong build. But if you had a 100mm race bike that weighed the same it'd be stupidly overweight.

    This is light:

24.9lbs, with 150mm of travel, tough kit all over, 2.3 tyres, and a gravity dropper  I wouldn't hesitate to race XC on it or to ride it down fort william dh. And it's easy to put on the roofrack!

The new Scott frames don't have V mounts though, so would have to be a disc build.

I'd say my Zaskar takes the 'sensibly light' route. The frame, in use, sits somewhere between what a Whippet and 456carbon would be designed for, and weighs in the middle too. 1st gen XTR wheels are tough, XT/XTR groupo is classic stuff and the rest of the parts are the budget light bits that we know work from the likes of Exotic.

    Weight is about 24lbs.

I imagine he'd bodge a v-brake onto it some how. I'd rather not think about that though...

These days you can get pretty close with a disc build anyway. There's a few brands of 230g tub rims floating around allow 950g disc wheels, brake weights are always falling, helped by companies like Scrub doing stupid light rotors.

  • I think my C456 is 25lbs ish with a reverb and the old parts.

That said i've put on some stans crests (from 719) aerolite spokes (from dtswiss DB) some formula R1's (from hopes) so I should have dropped a chunk.

    Should've got Sapim Superspokes :-)

The WW listings are pretty out of date now, still some relevant stuff, but it's dwindling!
  • Think my Cube reaction is 24lbs ish, Idon't think about it though, just get out and enjoy it.
