Hi, had my 3 week old focus cayo triple stolen a few weeks ago and trying to decide how to replace it.
was just going to do a straight replacement but then started having a look at the ribble bikes and now im confused!

the focus i can get for £1000 AND get a £100 voucher free to get pedals/new saddle, ideally £1000 is my limit too.

but im wondering if its worth spending a bit more on a ribble? either a sportive or a stealth although really i should be accepting the stealth as out of my price range. a ribble specced with shimano 105 triple and mavic aksium race clincher wheels comes to about £1250 , with me still needing to buy pedals and a womens saddle on top of that.

are the wheels/ frame really worth the extra money? i cant find the spec anywhere for the focus' frame weight, but i know the wheels are what lets the bike down.

of course the dream is a bianchi, but even 2nd hand i cant find anything carbon in the price range.

any advice appreciated, thanks
alice

Presumably you chose the Focus about 4 weeks ago and was happy enough to buy it then? If you are being swayed by other peoples opinions of the wheelset and this is what is causing you to doubt your decision then just get a set of Mavic Aksiums for £139 from Merlin and swap them onto a new Focus. This way you have got the wheels you want plus the extra £100's worth of accesories. Of course you could get the wheels from Wiggle and use the £100 towards them but they are dearer and only come in silver.

If however having ridden the Focus for 3 weeks you feel that it isn't the bike for you then by all means consider the Ribble BUT for goodness sake get a test ride first because you don't want to have it for 3 weeks and regret your decision because it is uncomfortable to ride.

Buying over the web is great for saving money but if you buy the wrong bike then all of the savings are worthless!

i hadnt realised decent wheels could be had so cheaply, thanks thats made a lot of sense i hadnt thought of that. Youre right i was happy with the bike in terms of i dont think i need a better spec than 105 ,but would like to upgrade the wheels. also been hearing a lot of bad things about ribble customer service and I've hated being without a bike for this short length of time so dont really want to risk waiting a month for delivery from ribble.

coming from a mountain bike background im a relative novice when it comes to road wheel specs - are mavic aksiums better than shimano rs30s for the same price of £140?
    many thanks
  • Better is of course purely subjective, you pays your money you takes your choice.

I think the main difference is that the Aksiums will be lighter and the RS30 are more aero so it depends on what you want from a set of wheels.

I have Aksiums on a carbon bike and RS10's on an alu bike and I cannot tell the difference with my type of riding and as long as they stay true then I am a happy bunny.

But then I don't race I ride for fitness and commuting but cover about 700 miles a month.
