Could i upgrade to 10 speed with my trusty crossrides? Wondered if the bike manufacturing cartel had engineered the need for a newer model? Or am i just being a bit cynical?

Yes the sprockets on the cassette are narrower spaced so a 10 speed cassette is as wide as a 9 speed cassette hence the need for 10 speed chains.
Eight- and nine-speed cassettes and freehub bodies have the same width (41.5 mm), but with the sprockets closer together; as a result the shifters are not compatible, but they use the same freehub bodies. Ten-speed cassettes are slightly more narrow than eight/nine so they fit on those freehubs but need a spacer, conversely eight/nine-speed cassettes do not fit on ten-speed freehubs.

  • Ah, so am i right in thinking to go from 9 to 10 speed I would need crankset, chain, cassette and rh shifter but the rear wheel can be left off the shopping list as well as the lh shifter?

    Cassette, Chain, Shifter and Mech.
No need to change chain rings as 9 speed will work unless you want to change the no. of teeth on the chainring(s). No real need to change crankset.

  • You will also need the two spacers that fit behind the cassette... 10 speed need the extra 1mm silver Shimano spacer as well as the original black one.

That is, if your cassette is Shimano 8)

Only road cassettes, no spacers on 10 speed MTB blocks.
  • I disagree - my Zesty needed both spacers when I swapped to Mavic wheels.

There's the thick Mavic one, but not the 1mm spacer you get with the road cassettes. Unless all of my cassettes have been missing something...
  • Well, like I say - mine needed the extra 1mm one. Weird.
