Orange Five AM 2012 Major Paint Problem

I have just got a jet black Orange 5 AM 2012, I went out on my first ride yesterday, got home cleaned the bike an noticed the top tube sheen has completely rubbed off it now looks very cloudy and and just awful.

I am absolutely raging. Pay 3 grand for a bike and the paint rubs off on the first ride.

I don't think so.

Are you wanting advice on what to do? What did you clean the bike with? Got any pics?
  • Cool story bro.

Sounds like you used a very strong cleaner, and could partly be your fault.
  • It was cleaned with water that is all. So not my fault.

Has anyone experienced this or heard of this happening on Orange bikes?

You expect that kind of thing to happen 3 years in to owning a bike not on the first day of use.
  • If it's a brand new bike with a fault, your first port of call is the shop where you bought it from, not a bunch of strangers on a forum. Call the shop, explain the problem and arrange to take it back for them to inspect and sort through Oranges warranty procedure.

  • Already contacted the dealer they said to phone back on Monday. Don't wear knee pads no. Just wondered if anyone had the same issue. Surely the paint they use at Orange is better quality than that.

My last bike was a black carbon fibre Scott Ransom, I owned that for 5 years and the paint was perfect.

Not had any issues with mine, shop should short it though
  • Had that problem with my shiny metallic paint on my Canyon. Went out for a very muddy (gritty mud) ride with 3/4 length shorts on. Rubbed grit all over the top tube, dulled the shininess a bit but it's to be expected I suppose. I was annoyed, but mostly with Durham trails.

It sucks, but will not affect how the bike rides so keep enjoying it!

BTW, it was so gritty that the crotch of the shorts was significantly worn after the ride, they've been going for a while though so I wasn't so disappointed.

This happened to my bike (GT) after riding trail centre's, I think it was the sand they use to repair the trails just blasting my lacquer coat plus me getting covered in the stuff and straddling the bike rubbing it more. Paint was actually fine though just use T-Cut to bring the finish back up and use some heli tape to protect the frame maybe.

What he said, difficult to avoid wearing shorts, unless you are a lycra monkey, even then you dont realise how much your legs/inner thighs come into contact with the frame just riding normally and it looks worse on dark colours, black is especially bad at showing every scratch/imperfection.
A berm? were you expecting one?

True, the sand at Afan destroyed a set of bearings for me in a ride when it was wet due to all the sand they have used.

I avoid most trail centers these days, even cwm has a certain dose of sand at the moment, seems a bit idiotic to build trails heavily with such an abrasive material :(
  • If it's a fault I'm sure Orange will sort it. I've had a couple of 5's and never had a problem with the paint. My friend's got my old 2006 frame and with a bit of polish comes up like new.

If it's due to the conditions just hit it with a paint renovator like Autoglym then polish it. :?

Aye, Orange finish is usually very good, I wouldn't expect this. Use will dull the paint over time, biking is pretty abrasive but wouldn't usually be so fast

(My bikes all look like they've been in a cement mixer, but it takes a while to end up like that even so)

I had an St4 in jet black and it was exactly the same, car polish(Mer) does bring back the shine. Think about it how do you think a glossy black car bonnet would look if you rubbed a gritty cloth over it! Glossy dark colours dont hide scratches well unfortunately.

My mates black motorbike was the same. He'd only had it two minutes and i couldn't believe the scratches and swirl marks all over the petrol tank!

My Soul swirled up eventually but it took over a year of constant use... And it's not like it got cleaned very much or polished ever!

    Hi,

My 2010 Marin Attack Trail is the same and its got a matt finish,???.
After a wet and muddy ride even my matt finish can look even duller, out with the polish and back to normal.

    Sounds odd but true.lol

  • My previous bike (Trek fuel ex8) was black and white - kind of super shiney metallic type paint. Rode it hard in a couple of sh1tty winters over Cannock Chase known for its gritty sandy soil and it still looked pretty damn good. Seems there might be a paint/laquer prob with yours

My black Spesh enduro frame was still shiny after 9 years of use. My stumpjumper frame has dulled badly after 2 years.

Autoglym Super Resin Polish works well to bring the shine back.

The right thing to do is get the dealer to look at it. If its wearing abnormally badly it could be an indication of a paint lacquer fault.
