replacing cartridge bearings in hubs

hello all,
does anyone know of a way to properly replace cartridge bearings in hubs that have shouldered axles? you know, the kind where the axle can't come out until a bearing on either side is removed?
getting them out is easy - pick an end and twat it with a hammer!
the problem is getting them back in. i've looked around at bearing presses and found the RRP Bearing press, but it doesn't look as if the threaded ?guide axle? would fit through the axle of the hub. and i don't think the ends that press the bearings (drifts?) are long enough to clear the hub axle before the bearing is in place.
i've done the neanderthal method of using a socket wrench bit and a hammer before, but i like to do things properly.
any thoughts/advice?
cheers

If I don't have the tools for that model of hub I'd tap one side out gently and remove the axle. Clean the hub shell and apply grease and place the axle back into the old bearing to allign the new bearing with. Then use the old bearing as a guide to drive the new one in until its's home.
It's good to have a set of sockets lying around to clear the axle aswell.
Repeat for the other side usally.0
