Can anyone comment on this bike? Seems good value in the sales at under £1200 but i hear Treks get mixed reviews and dont appear that popular on here. I quite like the frame (not the colours) and apart from the brakes and wheels the spec looks quite good.

Treks are good solid bikes. I have a Trek 1400 which has done a fantastic job. The Bontrager kit generally gets criticism, however, my Bontrager wheels and tyres are original and have done about 5000 miles with no punctures. The tektro brakes are not amazing although perform reasonably well with decent brake pads. I note you were looking for a sportive bike on another thread - how about the Verenti at wiggle?0

Buying any bike you need to go and try before you buy to see if the frame suits and you like the feel of the bike.
The Madone 3.1 is the entry level into Trek Carbon frames.
I have the Madone 5.9 and for me I love it. Great ride, light yet stiff. I have mainly Bontrager kit on the bike with Race X lite wheels, XXX boron carbon bars and x lite stem. If you like the ride of the 3.1 then I think you will find it to be a good choice.Trek Madone 5.9

It's all about the fit: if it fits, then Treks are as good as any other brand. I run a 2008 1.7, a Fuel Ex MTB, and 'er indoors and the nipper are on Treks too! No complaints & good support from both the LBSs.
If you really want to spend this sort of cash, I'd recommend getting a bike fit first: then you can match the recommended geometry to a few bikes and test ride them.0
