Last year, my student loan came to £4800. I spent about £900 on bikes and bike related stuff.

This year, it's in excess of £6000, and my living costs have gone down. *ponders*

My student loan doesn't even nearly cover my rent, consequently I rarely get money to spend on bikes

Except summer when I earns monies :D

Yeah, next year I move out to Hertfordshire though so it gets a hell of a lot cheaper thankfully

  • Just a small tip, having a huge student loan over your head really sucks when you get out working. I'd recommend saving what you don't use to pay back easily rather than spunking it on bike stuff.

My aunt had a student loan, and lived lavishly during her college years, she#s now 46 and still paying off the loan, because of the interest every month, she only is able to pay back 100 off the loan, and the other 400 a month goes to the interest. of course this was in the states where Uni fees are much higher, but still, it sucks having loans hanging over your head.

I genuinely don't give a fuck about having the student loan over my head. It gets paid as a tiny about of final salary, taken in the same way was PAYE taxes and national insurance. The rate is 9% on anything earned above 15 grand. So, if I'm in a job earning £16000 when I graduate (for example), I'll pay back £90 a year. If it's not all paid back after a certain timeframe, it gets wiped, and repayments only start once earning above £15000. Also, half of the 6 grand is a grant, which isn't repayable.

All in all, it's the best type of loan to spunk, and the only one it's nigh on pointless to try to pay back early.
  • Ah loan systems must be different in the UK that here in Austria or in the U.S.

On that note, buy a new bike!
