Metallic crack noise from fork

hi all,
i seem to be having a sudden problem with my forks. they are rockshox tora 302 u turn ones and are the 2008 model. the fork when fully extended to max travel (135mm) seems to be going tthrough its stroke extremely quickly when putting any weight on the front or when pressing down to use rebound to do a manual. as it gets to the bottom of its travel it appears to be making a metallic bang, as if its metal on metal but there is still a bit of travel left, so it cant be bottoming out completely.
however when i have the shock at its min travel (85mm) it appears not to have the problem at all and works fine, but i never use it like this when riding as it isnt enough travel.
other things i have noticed with the fork are that the lockout dial appears to be oozing a bit of oil and the lockout itself has quite a bit of travel, and about 3-4 days ago it had next to no movement when locked out.
i would appreciate any advice on this matter
thanks

Strip and service the fork, looking for damaged parts in the U turn assembly.0

okay, i shall get it done, most likely by a bike mechanic as i havent ever stripped forks or anything and i would probably end up doing something wrong. do you not think that anything could be wrong with the lockout due to the slight oil leaking and the play when it is locked out?
thanks0 -
It is supposed to have some movement when locked to aid traction. Could be a leaky o ring in there.
Service manuals available from SRAM if you want to have look what is in there.0 -
ive looked at the manual and it looks relatively do-able for me but i was wondering if you could give me a heads up as to what im looking for possibly once i have taken it out. would it be deformed springs? some object hitting when the spring compresses? any idea what i could be looking for at all? also i take it that i dont need to take the lower legs off if it is a coil u-turn one? how do i make sure it is a coil one, not air one?
thanks alot for the advice0 -
The negative spring may be damaged, or the bit the main coil spring winds into.0
