Race frame - S1 or ?

As I've got a spare groupset and wheels lying about I was thinking of getting a road frame for racing and leaving it set up with the carbon wheels, brake blocks etc purely for racing and then leaving the compact I put on on my current bike for the Alps for sportives, long hilly rides etc.

Ideally I was thinking maybe get one of the last S1 frames and then reversing the seat post for club 10s - I don't really open time trials but I find the club events work for me as training. That would mean I could sell the TT bike and hopefully just about cover the cost of the frameset. Anyone else used an S1 as a road race/time trial bike and if so how did you find it ? Are there any other bikes that come with a 2 position post I should look at ? I wouldn't want to go more expensive than the S1 - in fact that's already a bit more than I would really like to spend.

The alternative would be to get something like a Canyon frame or something which would be a bit cheaper and then if I wanted to TT on it stick a straight through post on to get a little further forwards.

it's a hard life if you don't weaken.

    Tom,

I think that you are a Derby-based lad, so you are welcome to come over and take a look at my Cervelo S1 (56cm if that's your size). Take it for a ride if it fits to help make your mind up if you like - PM me for details.

Posted on another thread recently but built up with secondhand but VGC Ultegra SL and NEW Shimano RS80 wheels for about £1K. Recently used it in the Derby Tri, flipping seatpost, to quite good effect (I was 27th out of 600 competitors on bike leg - and I'm approaching 50, so no spring chicken!! Many of those recording faster times would have been on full TT set-up ie. no clip-on bars and there were disc wheels aplenty with the quicker competitors).

Really like my S1 - very versatile - would make a great Crit bike I'm sure. A bit of a pocket rocket!

Somebody based in London was selling a 54cm frameset on BR this week - a few interested parties. There are a number of S1 frames/bikes on eBay at the moment.
  • Thanks, I'd be a 58 and I do have a mate with one in that size so can probably blag a go on it - he doesn't use it as a TT bike though so interested that you think it works OK like that.
