Shimano SLX front mech - intermediate stops

when nice and new my front mech had "intermediate" stops - ie on the big ring a slight touch on the lever would let the mech drop half a postion.
These stops dont seem to work any more - the "full" stops seem to be indexed just fine and I can sort of feel the mech catch on the intermediate stop - but it carries on going.
Is it wear and tear or have I done something wrong with the index ?
Hope this makes sense

I'm almost certain it didn't have half stops. I may well be wrong, but I only know of road shifters that do that.
(it would be the shifters that had the stops, not the mechs)0 -
Why would you want half a shift?I don't do smileys.

If you hadn't set your gears up properly.
I believe the idea behind it on road bikes is to stop the very slight rubbing.
However, I've always set them up to have a very slight rub at either end of the "middle" ring, since it would appear that's when the front mech is actually doing it's chainguide job properly.0 -
