Re indexing after removing rear wheel?

After removing my rear wheel at weekend I noticed my gears were very erratic and poor changes after a quick blast yesterday, well I had a look and had to re index my gears as they were a whole gear out. Still new to road cycling but wouldn't have thought that was normal, so I assume I did something wrong when removing rear wheel or refitting, thought I would ask here just in case I'm being a numpty?
Btw it's a cube with 105 compact gear set if it makes a difference.

Should be no need to re-index when refitting your rear wheel - check it's in straight is the first thing to do?
Of course, it may have not been in straight before, and now it is!
It's all too easy to do in a rush and end up with a wheel not seated properly.
Other than that, there's not much I can think of that you might have done to cause this!0 -
Only thing I can think of that hasnt already been mentioned, is did you bend the gear hanger?
Obviously with no wheel fitted it would be more exposed to potential damage.
I know when my mtb one got bent when a mate had a go on my bike once, I could never get the gears quite right until I fitted a new hanger.0 -
Cheers, will double check everything is as should be just in case. Didn't think that removing the wheel should have caused any issues.0

I've had this problem, always been a bit of cable slack a couple of turn with the downtube turny tightner thing normally does itThe dissenter is every human being at those moments of his life when he resigns

The solution is quite obvious.
However, you shoudlnt have to adjust indexing after removing the wheel, which is what the_Spooks is asking.0 -

Helpful.
Try reading the thread. My comment was in response to people telling him how to adjust his gears, which I am sure he knows. The question he was asking though, was whether he should have to do that after removing the wheel.

Check the rear mech is back in position, quite often mine gets rotated around the hanger clockwise when putting the wheel back in. Try giving it a nudge anti-clockwise and see if that cures it. Sounds exactly like the problem I have had, took me a while to figure it out!Saracen Tenet 3 - 2015 - Dead - Replaced with a Hack Frame
