Help with smelly shoes?

After 90 miles of a 100 last week the heavens opened and I got totally drenched all the way home. All fine but since I dried out my shoes, they absolutely stink and I cannot improve at all!

Have frebreezed them and soaked them in my assos cleaning fluid but neither has made a difference.

Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions as the shoes themselves are in pretty good condition.

Thanks

Top tip for any smelly shoes is to put them in the freezer overnight.

The bacteria that cause's the bad smell cant survive the cold conditions and die.

    Allong with the smell.

    This goes for trainers etc...
  • Nike had an issue a few years back with trainers getting smelly when they got wet - my son had a pair and the stench was unbelievable, we ended up binning them.
Carlsberg don't make cycle clothing, but if they did it would probably still not be as good as Assos
  • Thanks for the freezer tip! Will try that tonight!!

No worries, for the full service I put mine in the freezer first (in a carrier bag) to kill the bacteria then spray with frebreeze to freshen up.

Bingo bango, nice smelling shoes.
  • Wash them when they have been soaked in the rain. The water that runs off the road isn't particularly clean. Muc off do a shoe cleaner that seems to work OK.

avoid febreeze, i tried it once on my rucksack as in the summer it got a bit sweaty and it took ages to dry if washed

everything was ok for about 3 days, then some horrific reaction with the febreeze seemed to occur, it stank like excrement, it was eye watering, i had to wash the rucksack several times to get the stench out of it

    if the freezer doesn't work

you can soak them in clean water with a little iodine added, rinse well, put somewhere warm (not hot) to dry, wash shoes/footbeds separately, don't refit until dry

bhen dry sprinkle liberally with baking *soda* (the pure stuff, not the type mixed with other things) and leave in a sealed plastic bag for a couple of days, shake out before use
my bike - faster than god's and twice as shiny

Then in the oven at 190 for a couple of hrs and your done
  • Disinfectant/anti bacterial spray works a treat. I also use it to spray the pad on my shorts before washing. Lidl do one for about a quid. Much cheaper than the ones you get for shoes/trainers, and much more effective.
