Hotspots

Seems I'm starting to get a more frequent hotspot in my shoe while on the bike. It's intermittent but it's starting to irritate me a bit now

I've had them for years and I've got a pretty new insole in there. So is the hotspot an indication of the sole saying it's had enough? if not how do I address this?

Previously I had to get the cleat drilled out and I've replaced the plate at the same time and that's been no bother until now.

I've got my eye on a replacement. I'll wait till winter and pick something up in the sale while I'm using the winter boots.

Sidi: Eagle, Dragon or Spider models. At present I'm leaning towards the Eagle as Spider is too damn shiny and the Dragon has a silly wire system I can see getting messed up.
Anyone has any experience of those?

  • The cable system on the dragons is great, plus the replaceable sole is wonderful.

With hotspots, it's often the cleat bolts being a little bit too long, try fitting slightly shorter bolts. I know that the hot-spots i'm getting in my new shimano shoes are caused by a long bolt (because I accidentally fitted one and that's where the spot is!)

I would guess so. I don't get them riding, but I can get them skiing - usually once my feet have bedded back into the boots, and I've cranked the buckles up and am pushing hard on the fronts of the skis. I've assumed that hotspots come from pressure.

If your sole isn't spreading the load as it should, then I guess you could get pressure points. Can you try moving the cleats back or forwards 5mm as an experiment? If it "cures" the problem, I'd say it's a knackered sole. Just don't continue with the adjustment too long, or your knees might be making the next complaint.

ok cheers, noted on the dragon, the idea of a replaceable sole is appealing

it's been in there for a while and has been fine for months, otherwise I think you'd be spot on with your idea

I ask because the elimination of hotspots is always considered to be the only advantage of road pedal systems over MTB, since they have a much bigger contact point.

Had a quick google and those pedals look exactly like the style that can be more prone to hotspots.

Might be worth considering road pedals. I have limited experience, but I know these are a good stable platform.

Do you have any idea how hard it was not to post that in the OP?

pretty damn hard I can tell you.

Mudcow it's a specific point of pressure you feel in your foot.

RC commuting in those is much more tricky, also shimaNO

    Pfft. Fine.

But that would be my guess. A stiffer sole might solve it similarly.

given you're so small RC do those clips actually fit your entire foot on them?
