When is it OK to like SMUT, PORN and FILTH?

Family Guy, Inbetweeners, Spartacus Blood and Sand, True Blood.

Each have there special place in societies heart:

Family Guy is a symphony of casual racism, homophobia and filled balls deep with social taboo ranging from a pedophile to bestiality.

Inbetweeners is crude, vulgar and pushes the boundaries on many things, not least of which teenage boys dream of getting laid, masturbation and vulgar language.

Spartacus Blood and Sand and True Blood cannot be watched without needing to get laid and/or knock one out once most episodes have ended. One notch higher on the dial and you're watching porn, the hardcore stuff.

These TV shows are watched by millions enjoying social taboos. The shows are discussed openly and are recommended to those who do not watch them.

Do you enjoy them and if not why not?

If you do like them, are you happy to watch them with others, discuss, laugh and talk about them?

Why is it OK to enjoy TV shows like that but still get offended or take offense when people discuss sex or make a thread, jokingly, about sexual and social taboos?

Discuss.

Family Guy & The Inbetweeners are v good. Partly because they push boundaries though.

    Never seen Spartacus.

True Blood I find a bit hokey. Made it through S1 and S2 and then couldn't really be bothered. No amount of gratuitous anything will compensate for a weak underlying story in my book.

    Now, what was the question?

Regarding "the thread" it breaks T&C's here doesn't it? as kids can read this site, whereas those programs are after the watershed and therefore is protecting kids.

People talk about sex etc all the time, a bike forum might not be the best place to do that

    Wow, really?

You see that high-ground was lost when a Cycling Plus editor participated in the Girls in lycra shorts thread. There are other threads littered across this website with adult themes to it.

I've long since thought that it isn't Bikeradar's online duty to protect kids and perhaps that responsibility should fall to the parents. Besides, if I'm old enough to use an online cycling forum chances are I'm looking at sex anyway.

As for being a bike forum, Cake Stop, Crudcatcher, Commuting Chat moots that point as those are made largely for the online communities to discuss everything BUT cycling it seems.

But back to the point. Why take such offense to said thread when sex surrounds daily.

  • I love a bit of sex and violence me, but that mtb thread was still just dull attention whoring from the girls and childish fawning in the every desperate hope that they might get laid from the boys.

PS. Why was I not told of this "Spartacus" thing earlier? Mmm, sexy Romans.

Ah. Well I'm pretty hard to offend, so I have no qualms enjoying shows like that (assuming they are any good).

Spartacus was Thracian, not Roman. If Thrace still existed, it would straddle the borders of Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey. Probably very thickset and hairy (and thats just the women).

Theres a pretty big difference between the smut in Family Guy and that in the MTB thread.

    Mainly irony.

The 'casual racism and homophobia' is always used in a satirical way, though. It's written in the context of a fairly right wing, morally conservative country, and the characters parody this.

Never seen the Inbetweeners or any of the other stuff.

Vulgarity is fine if it's deployed with some wit. But like Greg66 said, if there's nothing behind it, then it becomes boring very quickly.

Family Guy I think is okay. I've no issues with the type of humour I just don't think it's particularly great. So yes to the type, but a no for me.

Inbetweeners is great fun. Pushes what's previously been mainstream but I don't think it's shocking, just well observed and well done.

Spartacus is complete rubbish. I enjoyed it. If Channel 5 did 'Rome' rather than BBC and HBO then they would have ended up with this. Tries to mix a bit of plot with the action but fails miserably and ends up with blood and tits. Still, enjoyed it.

True Blood. See Spartacus. Enjoyed it. Plot a little stronger than Spartacus but it's just soft porn with the plumber replaced with by vampires.

    Rjsterry (and others),

I think you are all missing the point.

Of course I enjoy family guy, true blood et al more than Kitty and Bint's thread. The point isn't even about the context in which the subject matter is delivered.

The point I'm making is that if people can stomach things like Family Guy and Inbetweeners then why demonstrate zero tolerance (to the point of being offended) towards a group of people discussing things of a similar nature?

I'm not saying you should like Kitty and Bint's thread as liking something is subjective. But what I don't understand is the zero tolerance for it when there are other glaring examples where people have enjoyed threads/topics/TV shows of a similar nature.

It's like not liking porn but enjoying a Spartacus sex scene - the one where the guy offered the slave "c*nt or coin" (and yes he did say that).

I don't think it was the subject matter that people found tedious (offensive is giving it too much credit). It just sounded like a load of teenagers hanging round the swings, drinking cider and bragging to each other. Inbetweeners manages to deal with that sort of subject matter in a funny way (so I'm told) so Gazlar, et al just need to try a bit harder.

Personally, I'm not offended at all with that thread. Its just a bit banal. Funny that you think that the humour is somehow equivalent to that of Family Guy and the Inbetweeners. The Inbetweeners specifically is funny to me because it reminds me perfectly of what it was like to be an arrogant, horny, know-it-all teenager just before becoming an adult. Its excellent use of nostalgia that makes that programme great. Its pretty knowing. I don't enjoy it because it mirrors how I behave now, because at my age that would make me a massive tw*t. ;)

Uh oh, it's reached that point in the DDD thread where he's got defensive. Thread done, thanks for coming everyone.

DDD, it was clearly a joke at the start. You start more non cycling related threads than anyone else, hence the facetious comment 'do you actually cycle?'. That was it, no drama
