Hi. I am still after a carbon road bike (already have a VN Mistral that i will keep).

I fell in love with this Eddie Merckx today and the bike is lovely and it fits. The bike was £2100 but is now £1500. Compared to your Ribbles etc this still seems expensive for a Veloce Groupset equipped bike so i guess i would be paying for a quality frame? The frame finish is raw carbon (no nice weave) and i dont know if this is good or bad - any thoughts on this?

Anyway ultimatley i would like some views on this bike and if someone on here has one they could review for me that would be great.

Regards

  • I don't have this bike but Veloce is a solid reliable groupset - I have it on my Izoard and love it - and a carbon weave finish is just that, a finish. the real meat is underneath.

If it fits and you love the looks you should go for it. I think it's a cracking looking bike and it's got the Cannibal's name all over it so it's going to make you go really fast ;-)

Compared to the Ribbles this has Eddy's name on it, looks a hell of a lot nicer IMO, and i'd say is more exclusive. I know which one I would buy everytime and which one I would perfer to swing my leg over and like to ride hard (that sounds wrong!). The Merckx also come with a limited lifetime warranty.

Theres a couple of reviews here, different specs though:

I have an emx 1, i bought it a few weeks back and love it. Mine has 105 groupset like yours it was on a sale price at my lbs. I had read reviews on the bike and was keen to have a look at the ultegra version but then saw this 105 version with £500 off. I tried it for size on a turbo trainer and was a good fit. It had base end shimano wheels on so i decided as it was down in price i`d invest in a set of better wheels and the bike shop did me a good deal on a set of Krysirium elites.
As far as ride and handling, i`m not an expert but i love the way it handles, cornering is precise and it feels stable when i`m going fast, i`m riding faster than my old bike and don`t feel much road buzz.
I think upgrading the wheels was agood move as it saved a bit of weight, i also like the fact that its ba bit different to the normal treks , specialized etc.
The only minor problem i have noticed is the chainset on mine is a 52/39 instead of a compact 50/34 that was on my old bike and with a 12-25 cassette fitted at the back i`m finding it a bit more of a struggle up steeper hills, need to lose more weight and build up ny strength.
All in all i love it and am very pleased with it and would reccomend it.

    +1 - and I own a Ribble!

What I would say is that there is little between the lower end Campag groupsets anyway. I think now, if I wanted a new bike with Campag, I'd go either for Veloce, or Chorus if I wanted 11 speed. I wouldn't bother with anything in between. Last year it was different - then I reckon Centaur and Athena were the sensible options.

I took an EMX1 for a spin and I thought it was very nice

I bought a Specialized Roubaix in the end as I was looking for something that handled like a touring bike
  • Comes out of the same mould as a Pinarello and if you get a chance to look at the BB shell you will see the pinarello graphics.

Great frames and worthy of the name

Well i took it for a test ride and can say i love the bike.

Its not radically different to my Mistral but nice all the same. The Veloce brakes are a revelation compared to my 105s and i did like the Campag shifting. Need to sleep on it a bit but as a summer bike it will be great as it seemed very responsive when pushed compared to the Mistral but very stable at the same time.

Aahh can anyone lend me £1500 :D

Can`t lend you the money but lots of bike shops offer o% deals these days or credit cards with 0% purchase deals but you have to be strict with your money or it will end up costing you loads more.

I'm also about to pull the trigger on a veloce equipped EMX-1.

However, i'm tempted to go all out for an ultegra equipped EMX-1 in the sales for around £1800.

Would it be worth going the extra for the ultegra equipped bike?

Or spend the difference on a wheel upgrade from the Khamsins. Fulcrum 3's?

My LBS were raving about the EMX-3 but i can't find any in the sales :(
  • I might go for the wheel upgrade
  • I might go for the wheel upgrade

    Yeah, better wheels before gruppo

    Thanks for the replies

What would be a worthwhile wheel upgrade?

I could go up to £400 max, but would prefer 300/350.

The bike will be used for Sunday runs/sportives and i weigh 85k.

Is there clearance for 25mm tyres?

Krysirium elites like the bike in the thread or some Fulcrum 3s.

when i bought my emx1 pictured above i upgraded the wheels when i bought the bike and the bike shop just charged me the difference between the full cost of the wheels on the bike which were shimano rs20`s or 30`s and the full cost kyrsium elites so it didn`t cost me too much to upgrade and this was on a sale price bike . I weigh about the same as you and can reccomend the elites, the more i ride my bike the more i love it.

Another taker of an EMX-1. After a 13 week wait for a Rose bike, Bikelab in Richmond said enough is enough and offered an EMX-1 Veloce for £1,250, down from their sale price of £1,500.

Buying on cyclescheme, so a great deal.

About 500 miles in so far, and very impressed.

So with the money I've "saved" I'm also looking at Fulcrum3 / Mavic Elite and Campag Neutrons as an upgrade to the Khamsins.

I have a pair of Elites on another bike, which I really rate, so any thoughts on Fulcrums3 or especially the Neutrons would be appreciated.

Another set of decent Campag compatible wheels to look at are Hope RS Monos.
  • can anyone give me a steer on sizing for this EM bike: I am 5' 6" and 30 inside leg?
    Thanks.
  • Hello

Just thought I'd add that i got an EMX-1 105 in november, and I love it!

Test rode quite a few bikes in the same price bracket and fell in love with it, it climbs really well, descends amazingly and keeps wanting to go faster and faster.

    Im 5'10" 32 inside leg and ride a 51cm, equivalent to a 57.7 apparently

    I am 5'9" and have a 48cm frame which is equivalent to a 54cm i think.
