Specialized ajustable stem

I use this stem and it seems obvious that to adjust it you rotate the internal collar so that the shim aligns with different parts of the spacer, so changing the stem angle. However, I notice that the stem only rests on the front of the spacer with a gap at the back. Is this how it's supposed to be?

  • Where abouts is the shim in relation to the gap?

I guess it is at the back to tip the stem forward.

  • The 'shim' is the collar shown here:

and works as the flange at the base differs in thickness all the way around. Mine is set up for minimum angle, 8 degrees, but, as I understand it, if you choose a setting between maximum (16 degrees) and minimum the stem will be tilted to one side. Is this right?

(Just to confuse things, my stem is a different model from the one in the link but the principle is the same)
  • Looks to me as that is how it is meant to work. If you are tiltiting something against a fixed position there has got to be a gap somewhere. As long as everything is tightened down securely I wouldn't worry.

  • the lip on the internal shim should sit at the bottom, the top cap will then sit with the + or - facing forward depending on if you have set the stem in a negative or positive position

+1. You have the shim in upside down. The lip should be below the stem.
  • All sorted, thanks.
