Planet X Designed Brakes

I am considering buying a pair of Planet X's own design ultralight brakes for a road bike. They are well priced and the weight is less than Shimano Ultegra or 105's.
Does anyone have a comment to make regarding the quality of manufacture, functionality and longevity.

  • Just so long as you fit them right then they are very good. Manufacturing quality is brilliant for the price. OK they don't quite have the stopping power of my Chorus dual pivots but if you fit some Swiss Stop pads then they're not far off.

    +2... If you change wheels a fair bit... I wouldn't bother...
    Start with a budget, finish with a mortgage!

    They look great but single pivot brakes are a bugger to set up unless you love tinkering, and as previously mentioned they a pain if you have to take your wheel out.
  • I had these on My SL Pro Carbon
    They're ok, but not great.
    I changed to Ultegras and was amazed how much more pwerful they are.

  • Got them fitted to my current race bike.
    Very good brakes and can stop you on a six pence. (Swiss stop pads come as standard).
    They are definitely trickier to set-up than 105 & Ultegra and need checking before every ride. If they're off centre you notice the difference in stopping power. Just takes a second to correct them though and I always like to give the bike the once over before settting off so am ok with this.

  • Thank you for all the comments, all very helpful and I think I will stick with dual pivot brakes despite the cost. I don't like tinkering.

    I'd confirm what said, the weight saving isnt worth the loss of performance.

    I've only just got the hang of setting them up and they are better than before, but still not great, even more annoying when you're swapping out brake pads to switch between carbon and alloy wheels / cork and rubber pads.

    The outer cable length affects the centring, and so does the screw out adjuster, so I found I need to alter the grub that locks onto the cable.
