Thanks to this forum (and £££ spent on tools & products online!!) I can now pretty much strip back any part of my bike to inspect, clean and keep it in tip top condition.

It seemed daft taking it to the bike shop for simple stuff, and as a wise man on here recently wrote - "you wouldn't take a guitar back to the music shop every time it needed re-tuning".

I think I get as much pleasure tinkering with my bike than I do riding it, sometimes!!

Oh, and as I have learned from trial-and-error (lots of errors), it has made me all the knowledgeable - you only make a daft mistake once before learning never to do it again!

The only part of the bike I have yet to tinker with & which therefore still remain a mystery are the hoods / levers. I plan to change my groupset at some point, and look forwards to doing this myself!

PS thread prompted by me just taking my BB apart, cleaning the grinding paste off it and the chainset, and then putting it all back cleaned & lubed for super smooth action! (all for the first time!)
  • I'm aiming for where you've got to; but it's taking me a while. Nice one!
  • Like yourself Secteur I enjoy working on my bike, especially since I got a workstand 8) it just makes things so much easier to do.

Agreed, nice to have a go at things, after all you might just give yourself a suprise at what you can do!

I just swapped the sora front shifters on my trek 1.5 for a set of 105 units so that my commuter (the trek) is more like my posh number (Kuota Kebel) with ultegra.I was getting fed up with the change to the side mounted thumb shifters so went for the upgrade. It was quite nice squeezing that tenth cog out of it once id swapped the 9 speed cassette for a 10 speed ultegra 12-23 i had lying around. My girlie was saying " you should take it to the bike shop if you don`t what your doing". Well so far so good, not that ive rode it yet! as ive knackered some nerves in my neck leading to pains in my left arm. So if you can`t ride a bike, upgrade it!

I have to admit its a bit ott changing the sora when they function very well but, im happy and thats the main thing.

    Cheers
