cross gearing issue

ok my group set is a prodiminantly 105 (brake/gear lever, double chain ring, front derailleur and cranks are 105) aside from the rear derailleur which is an uletgra.

most of the time I only use the big chainring regardless of my gear selection (high/low). i have set my derailleurs as good as i can so that there will be no chain rubs on the front derailleur and it has been like that since i had my bike.

i use to follow the advice of experience cyclist on not to cross gear because its not good for the gear but cycling in London requires me to changes gears very often (run/stop in every stop light) which makes changing front and rear gear very laborious. so i decide to just use the big chain ring regardless of the gear selection. i dont have any issues with chain rubs or abnormal gear changes. the chain tension is the same throughout the entire gear change but only ever slightly high when at high gear. smooth gear change too.

my question is even though im not feeling any problems with the gear, am I slowly destroying my gear system? what do you think will happen in the long run?

ive taken 3 shots of my gear set at high, mid and low gear selection and if you can see there is not much difference from the lowest and the highest with regards to cross gear chain angle.

PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT THIS. THANKS A LOT!

  • You might add increased wear when using the big rear sproket but there designed to work on all rings so it shouldnt be a problem. Just be sure to 'trim' the front mech when using the big un at the back (stops chain rubbing.)

I tend to avoid big ring to biggest sprocket - on the rare occasions I need a gear below big ring to second largest sprocket I drop down to the small ring. You might get somewhat faster chain wear if you use the extreme cross and it's not as efficient in power transfer terms as using a straighter chain run, but it's not a disaster.

    Nicely maintained bike btw.
