Trek 800 c1992

I have a Trek 800 Antelope from about 1992.
It's a strange beast. It has 26" wheels that have had slicks on for a number of years. MTB parts but it has cantilever brakes (not V Brakes).
It has a straight bar, but, being a roady, I find it very strange.
I could fit bar ends, but that only gets me part way to handlebar freedom. I am used to drops and bullhorns, and I spend a lot of time on the bend of the bars - right where the bar and the bar end would join!
Can I get away with fitting a road style bullhorn to this bike? Will the MTB brake-shifters fit?
I have a pair of road brake levers I could use on the end of the bullhorns, and I could probably find a cheap stem shifter, which is what I have on a 531 frame set up as a 29er in Cyprus.
What is practical and sensible for this old bike. I don't want to spend much as the whole point is to have a bike for shopping that will blend into the racks and not be worth nicking. I dare not let my hand made Audax out of my sight!

Road brake levers do not work correctly with cantis without usually modding one or the other.
If the bar is 22.2mm diameter, then your controls will fit on the flatter part.0 -
The cantis fitted look very like traditional road style centre pull brakes., not the direct pull V-brakes which have longer levers.
That's why I am confused. When were V-brakes designed? Early 90s?0 -
About 1996. Give it a try, may work but can't say for certain.0
