popping inner tubes

I have a raleigh pursuit (yes i know the jokes...called pursuit cos its so heavy you will always be chasing somebody...) and have been running conti ultrasport 700 x 23 tyres no probs for a while.
Last week when pumping my tyre up to around 100 psi (fairly heavy bloke) my inner tube popped. repaired & replaced but after pumping up it lasted around an hour (just stood not used) then it popped again. it seemed to be bursting towards the rim. There are no protrusions, but to make sure i:-
Replaced the inner tube
replaced the rim tape with velox
still keeps popping towards the rim, almost like a tiny bleb with the hole in the centre.

Any suggestions? bikes pretty useless without a tyre.
(nb front tyre has same set up,and has no problems)

  • Check the tyre for holes and make sure that the rim tape is over the spoke holes and no gaps.
  • yup been there done that, no holes, no gaps tried all the normal stuff - this is really weird, its not even in the same place all the time.

    Always on the inside?

It does sound like the rim tape is a little too narrow. It's quite easy for it to shift around a bit when you're putting the tyre + tube on. Try wrapping some electrical insulation tape around the rim a couple of times to reinforce the rim tape (not a permanent solution, but will eliminate the rim tape if you get no more tube failures).

  • i tried the electrical tape option before getting new rim tape (as i'm a cheap arse yorkshireman!)
Rim tape is definitely wide enough, made sure when buying it today.LBS thought this would solve the problem, i did too.

Is it worth going down the road of slightly larger inner tube, i.e. 23 to 28mm? anybody had any problems with doing this?

I had a similar problem with a friend's bike. Eventually I suggested she get the tyre checked over at the LBS. It turned out there was a thorn in the tyre which didn't protrude when I checked inside the tyre before fitting it and inflating however as the tube inflated the tyre stretched and the end of the thorn appeared and BANG.

The LBS notice the end of the thorn on the outside of the tyre and pulled it out with either tweezers or long nosed pliers.

Bigger inner tubes won't really help. They're not especially stretched out once inside the tyre, so the wall thickness will not be appreciably higher with a wider tube, and you may even encounter difficulties getting it to inflate in an even fashion.

There's no reason why you should have to do anything out of the ordinary. Stick at it, you'll work out what the fault is eventually.
