Obvious is long sleeves, jacket & tights but my suggestion is don't skimp on your, ahem, extremities! By that I mean it is well worth investing in some good waterproof/thermal gloves, a stretchy skull hat which will fit under a cycle helmet and some overshoes.
  • Im looking for suggestions for tried and tested gear really
specific makes and models so I know what to look for

Absolute on Ebay have some cracking Campag deals.
I've got jacket, longs and gloves due today, I'll report on quality when they arrive.
Any size queries with Campag clothes just call Justin at Absolute, helped me no end with sizing and getting the exact models I wanted (which weren't yet listed on Ebay), top bloke.

If you are looking for merino, check out Chocolatefish. Genuine NZ made in the factories that icebreaker used before fleeing to China.
I have T shirts that are 4 years old in regular use. I took 2 on a 2 month tour and used them daily.
You dont need cycle-specific features in winter, eg back pockets on every layer.
A good windproof/softshell top will do for most days.
    Neck buff/tube/headover is essential.
Expensive helmets have lots of holes. Cheaper ones have more polystyrene. Which is warmer?
