Lockout issue with a Suntour 4160

Hope someone can help, I'm a bit miffed!!
Recently bought a Giant Roam 2 for my commute to work and back, and whilst the suspended front forks are great for comfort I've managed to knock a few minutes of time off my PB by locking out the forks, this is where I think they are a little bit cheap.
There is about 5 mil of loose travel where every dropped curb/slight bump I go over involves a 'metal on metal' clunk, a bit like when you ride with a soft tyre.
Firstly, is it supposed to be this loose (its the first bike with lockout I've had), and secondly, if it isn't, how would I go about fixing it, is it a simple adjustment or a 'back to the shop' and let them do it?
hope you can help guys!!
