Ola - Calling all Essex/South East (mountain) bikers.... just thought I'd let you know that Essex County Council have a survey relating to what happens with the Hadleigh Olympic Mountain Bike Course after the olympics. Survey only takes 5 - 10 mins and asks about what level it should be left at and whether it should be added to with extra facilities...... so this good chance for local and not so local (mountain) bikers to let them know what it should be like and who it should be aimed at.

Some of the reports on the legacy seemed to suggest they're thinking about removing most of the obstacles etc - now where's the fun in that!. So this perfect opp to let them know there is demand for it to be real decent place.... and lets face it Essex & the South East needs all the help it can get  .

Survey needs to be completed by end of Septemeber and here is the link:

Spread the word!.

PS - any chance of getting this as sticky until end of Sep???? - tanks

Done - don't live locally, but would make the effort to go there to ride the Olympic course, not a watered down version.

That should be the focus of a much bigger centre encouraging cycling of all ages on various trails, but Olympic trail should be left alone. Seems illogical to try and create a legacy that removes the essence of that legacy...

You'd hope they could leave the course largely as it is - make it a bit more tricky techincally perhaps but add a few chicken runs where required to enable beginners to enjoy the trail as well.
You only need two tools: WD40 and Duck Tape.
If it doesn't move and should, use the WD40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use the tape.
  • Done. cheeky bump
  • Done - from Chelmo. This could be a big deal for biking!!

    +1

Of course, they'll be worried about Health & Safety...Not to mention the fact that they haven't got any money.

  • I understood that there is a problem with leaving it intact as the land is owned by the Salvation Army who are renting it out for the event.

..as well as not having any money...

I've said that ripping out the technical features will leave a track that appeals to nobody- it'll still be a race track, it won't suddenly become a blue or green route just by making it easy. Beginners won't like the format or the climbs, intermediates won't like the width and the lack of interest.

Making good beginner and intermediate routes is hard! You've got to do it right, otherwise you end up just building another canal towpath and there's no shortage of that sort of riding already, it doesn't need purpose-built facilities for that.

Also mentioned Dalby and Fort William as examples of how it's been done before and how well they work.

Done, it's so important that a course is retained that people want to ride, otherwise it will just be a waste.

  • thanks to those who took the (short amount of) time to complete the survey. Hopefully it might help in some small way.

The survey is only open for another week so for any who haven't completed now is the time..... even if you live nowhere near Essex!.
