Went for my first night ride last night & realise i need better lights!!! I fancy putting some together myself & see if they are any good before i shell out some serious money for some. Can anyone who has done this give me any info/plans on how to do it, eg parts, time to do the job & overall cost.

Many thanks for any help & happy riding :D

  • Lights are cheap as chips...just not the overpriced branded ones you see in your lbs, not much point trying to make your own.

Here are some examples of what ppl use.

MY Dealextreme T6 arrived on Tuesday, have seen them in action in my riding club, they costs just over £28 through paypal but you need a US to UK plug adapter (I already had one....), I can't see you making better for less.

  • I bought some of the deal extreme ones from ebay. Cost £32 pound but it from hong kong. I think they are called magic shine. I got 2, one on my bars and one on helmet. Awesome lights. Went out in the woods the other night, first time night riding. Well impressed.

I made my own helmet mounted light a few years ago. Got a LED torch and did cut and shut job on it to shorten it. made an external battery pack for it and connected it via some wire and waterproof connectors. it takes standard size drop ins so I can upgrade the LED or reflector easily

Works very well now I've refined the design a bit but it took ages to get it this good. I wouldn't bother any more. When I did it, there wasn't any bike specific lights apart from the super expensive branded versions so it was worth while but no point any more. The bike lights on DX are so cheap and work well its just not worth the effort unless you;re into that stuff and want to do it for the fun of it.
