replacing caged bearings with loose bearings

Hi guys,
The bearings in my headset are not looking too good and need replacing. I currently have caged ball bearings.
Am I correct in thinking these can be replaced with loose ball bearings without any issue?
If so how do I know what size ball to replace them with? Is it simple as measuring the balls in the cage and buying ones of the same size?
thanks Jai

Thats correct, same size balls, although I think you need to add a couple extra to make up for the lack of cage. Remember, balls are measured in inches not mm.A Flock of Birds

You fill the bearing cup, and remove two balls.0

Cool thanks, nice and easy.
oh one more question: The bigger the grade number the rougher the bearing right? so what is the maximum grade I should buy?0 -
Makes virtually no difference! if you want to spend extra money, go for stainless bearings. These are a little softer, but won't pit nd rust as easily, and form that grinding paste.0
