Definitely no cull in Richmond atm. They normally put warning signs up a week or two in advance; last year I think the Autumn one was at the beginning of November...

Bushy was open by the time I got there just before 8. Thankfully, I'm not keen on the road to Teddington.

What do you guys do when Richmond Park is shut and you can't wait till 7:30?

Kingston Hill then up the A3 as far as Putney, or round through Richmond?

I went though Richmond on the one occasion that's happened to me.

Through Richmond for me. Up Star and Garter Hill and down Queen's Road onto the Upper Richmond Road is quickest, but the hill comes about half a mile into my commute, and I often lack the motivation to do it with cold legs. On the way back, nicely warm, it's Queen's Road and Star and Garter every time...

I was in the park from 10pm on Saturday night doing a couple of laps. Full moon, nobody around and everything was decked out for Sunday's London Duathlon. It is such a nice place without any cars and the view out over the lights of London is stunning. Lots of deer by the side of the road, but not causing obstruction.

I reckon you would find Wimbledon, Wandsworth, Battersea, Royal Hospital Road, Victoria better
  • Very pleasant in RP again this morning, 7:30 ish - anyone else out and about at that time?

Yep, past the royal ballet school and down to priory lane. Hit the park about 7:37 but was running late, usually in at Ham gate for 7:30 on the dot.

  • I quite like the Kingston Hill / A3 / Putney route.
In fact sometimes, just for giggles I carry on the A3 to Wandsworth, up York Rd, Battersea Park and then join Embankment.
All takes the same amount of time TBH.

I'm going in through Kingston Gate around 0735 atm.
    FCN 2-4.

"What happens when the hammer goes down, kids?"
    "It stays down, Daddy."
    "Exactly."
  • Can those of you with bright and/or flashing lights do the decent thing and switch to a constant mode and angle the damn things down please!

As a clue if the cyclist coming towards you has a hand between their eyes and your bike then your lights are flashing and/or too high.

    Thank you.

PS - the park is lovely without traffic, agree that we need to watch out for runners, cyclists without lights, skiers etc and the deer are noticeably more inclined to get on the road when the cars are gone. But it is still lovely.
  • Get a loads flashing front lights though Bushy even little blinkies on a dark night it's really not nice.

Though on the whole the royal parks in the dark is lovely.

I did a couple of laps just after 0900 this morning (WFH - first son's first day at school #proud#) and found myself longing for night and no cars. Two near misses from cars coming by too closely, far more closely than the commute, and one idiot woman who refused to give me my due right of way at the roundabout by Kingston Gate. Roll on night - I will be in the park from 2100 this evening if anyone fancies some social laps.
  • just took me a spin round on the way home- first time there without cars. bliss

an odd thing struck me. as soon as i got into the gate i noticed the temperature drop at least a couple of degrees. I imagine its because you're further away from the urban heat island thing you get nearer to clustered buildings.

And there's another noticeable drop in temperature as you go through the dip by Ham gate in the mornings.

Rode back through there tonight with JZed. First off it was chuffing cold, though having say outside only wearing a lycra top and 3/4 bibs for 2 hours probably didn't help.

Secondly, the deer are suicidal. JZed and I both had good lights on but 2 deer still jumped out in front of us. We saw the first one coming and were already on the brakes when the 2nd bolted out following its mate. Quite cool, but pretty scary. The full moon lent some extra mood lighting too. I'll be back for some more action over the winter without a doubt.

It was cold last night and the deer were on the roads more than normal. I was wondering whether the tarmac stays warm when the sun has been shining on it during the day? Rode between 2100 and 2200 and only saw 4 other bikes and one runner. What time were you guys there?
  • Cycled through just before 7am this morning from Kingston to Roehampton, the mist and the early morning sunrise was fantastic. Had a rabbit jump in front of me near the golf course.
Fat lads take longer to stop.
