Chainring Size stupid question

I am currently converting my Hardtail to 1 x 9 (mainly due to a broken front mech and shifter and the cable holder on the frame has sheared off)

I have done most work, I have removed the front mech and shifter and also I have also got a XC seatclamp chain device ready. I have all the tools ready for crank removal and some narrow chain ring bolts on their way.

I currently have a XT M770 triple chainset but I want to get a new single ring that covers most situations. I find that the middle ring on the M770 triple is too easy to spin on flats and downhill and the big ring is too difficult. According to my understanding the standard triple has 22/32/44.

My question is this, please ignore my ignorance!:

If I get a standard 36t 104PCD chainring will this work with my standard 9spd rear cassette and XT Mech?

Also will I need BB washers etc?

Advice please?

    Would a 36t give a better ratio than a 32t or is a 38t a better option?
  • It depends on your power. 32t or 40 is best for someone, 36 for me.

I mainly ride road/fire track and a few simple XC runs at the weekend, it would need to be optimised for road with a couple of long hills (not too steep usually in middle 32t and 2 or 3 from lowest out back on 11-34t
