Hi all,

I was wondering if there is any real difference if I upgraded my standard Tectro Brakes to Shimano 105s on my Secteur sport?

Do I get greater braking power etc?
Cheers

try koolstop salmons brake pads first. You may find its sufficiently improves breaking
  • They only seem to be available as inserts, and not as complete pads with the bolt like my Tektro brakes have.

I have searched and cant find any like that anyway

    edit: typical, just found them

My tektros are pretty good to be honest. Cant say I've noticed muchh difference between them and my DA ones. Certainly not enough for me to be bothered splashing out on upgrading them anyway.

I have a secteur comp which came with Tektro brakes and "stock" pads.

The pads were alarmingly crap and I nearly over-shot a junction a couple of times when I first used them.

I upgraded the brakes to 105's to match the rest of the groupset and I also started using Salmon KoolStops, and the difference was massive.

I am quite sure that the improvement was 100% due to the pads, not the brake upgrade to 105's.

You can fit these to your Tektro's.

Also, I assume your groupset is 105-5600 and I am not sure if the 105-5700 brakes are exactly the same pull ratios etc, and you will struggle to buy 105-5600 brakes now (I got pretty much the last ones around at the time back in April)

I have a Secteur with Tektro brakes and a VN with 105 brakes. The 105 calipers and pads are vastly superior ie: they will actually stop you - unlike the tektro one's!

  • There's nowt wrong with tektro calipers - there's no reason they shouldn't stop you as fast as any other calipers. It's all down to the friction material in the pads. The bog standard tektros can lock the wheels on my bike no problem at all.

Of course if you want more bling, less weight or a slightly different feel it might be worth the investment.

Another vote for keeping the Tektro brakes and simply swapping the pads. Best ones I have used are the dual compound Koolstops available from i-ride:

    Massive improvement in all weather.

these are the ones you need to fit your Tektro brakes - the come with TWO sets of replaceable pads and the holders you need.

I swapped the pads for salmons and didn't notice that much difference but when I changed the calipers to 105 to I did feel a tangible difference.

you could brake faster as your wallet was lighter perhaps?

  • I didn't realise quite how poor the Tektro brakes were until I put 105s and Koolstops inserts on!

I would definitely swap the pads first.

I have stuck some koolstop salmons on mine as the difference was very noticeable indeed.
  • I suppose it might help to identify exactly which tektro calipers everyone is talking about. As with any other manufacturer not all models are equal - they do make some high end stuff too so to say tektro brakes are poor is a huge generalistion.

In my case I think I've got the r530 model which seem to be pretty effective. On my old bike I had a lesser model which wasn't so good.
