I've done something to my knee - outside of left knee cap, hurts when I put down the hammer (eg climbing) - fine otherwise

Think I strained it a few weeks back, have been off the bike for a couple of weeks on holiday but it's reoccurred

Have I f**ked it? What should I do???

It's just a hill. Get over it.

Rest, check pedal alignment and seat height, use lower gears.

    Probably.
  • Don't ask medical advice on a forum, consult a doctor. Could be an actual physical problme, but until finding out whether there is something serious behind it, I wouldn't mess with setup at all.
  • read up on ITB
could be just strain after two weeks off (how old are you)
did you stretch before - after
    hill inthe way

could be one of soooo many things
  • Go see a Physio first - get a diagnosis of the problem and if its an injury or condition that needs treated. Once you know what the problem is you can begin to assess what may have caused it a- any decent Physio will be able to do this you don't need a bike specialist at this stage. Once you know what the problem is and get it treated then you can begin to assess what to change on your bike set-up.

The symptoms you describe could have any number of causes that may or may not have something to do with cycling (I'm a physio myself).

If you can't get to an NHS physio via your GP go private to one reccomended by someone you trust (preferably) but make sure they are HPC registered -

    before booking in.

    Good luck!

Thing is a sports physio will cost - or to get one on the NHS you have to get past your GP (The idea of GP'S is stop patients getting at the treatment)

your kneecap probably isn't tracking properly over you knee. a few stretching excercises will probably sort this out.
  • Had the same problem, for a long time nothing to painful just a annoying twinge especially on long rides. I have just raised the seat hight and the problem has gone my legs must have grown because when i set the bike up at the start my seat position was at my maximum, may be with getting fitter my riding position has changed.
  • Could be your IT Band. (commonly known as runners knee & affects cyclists)
Which causes pain on the outside of your knee, can easily be fixed with stretches. See a sports physio for a diagnosis though.
