is it ok to use mountain bike pedals and shoes on a road bike, due to a bad car smash years ago i have very little movement in my left ankle and my right foot points out a bit, not a problem on my mountain bike but would road shoes and pedals constrain my feet too much and give me problems elsewhere. cheers

Nah, it's fine. I use spd's on my commute (road) bike, it's easier to walk.0

Perfectly fine mate. Loads of roadies use SPD pedals. I use that set up for commutting - like you I am not that confident clipping in and out - so use a pedal with spd on one side and a platform on the other. with recessed cleats in MTB shoes - it gives me lots of options.
you are missing on that tight clipped in - big power transfer that something like spd\sl gives. but you can cross that bridge if\when you feel the need to.0 -
If you use *very* stiff, eg carbon, soled recessed-cleat (MTB) shoes, there's no discernible difference in power transfer or hot spots compared to road shoes.
The only disadvantage is they're a bit heavier due to the tread. Big plus side being practicality of being able to walk.
The Crank Brothers Candy range of pedals are another alternative to SPDs, giving loads of pedal float and very easy double-sided entry (ooh-err). But pricier, and there have been durability issues in the past for some, though not me.0 -
Totally fine. As others have said, plenty of riders use SPD on their road bikes.
I use them on my audax and fixed bikes as I like to be able to walk reasonably properly in cafes etc.
Some people will say that you HAVE to use SPD-SL or similar as you should optimise your setup for cycling - but I prefer to optimise my setup to ensure I get to the cakes before them in their walk-like-a-duck shoes!

I have used both only thing I would say is on my road bike I did catch my double sided spd's a couple of times pedaling into a corner. So you may wanna get single sided pedals.Felt AR4
