Sorry; I know there's a bit of repetition in this, but I haven't managed to trace the old thread which I think exists on this subject. I'm looking for any recommendations on what 'box set' might be worth buying.
Me 'n' Her Indoors both enjoyed 'The Sopranos' & then moved on to being glued to the screen with 'The Wire', but she was bored by Lost & neither of us really fancy the West Wing.
Answers on a post card, please.
Cheers All

I really enjoyed The Shield - it's pretty full-on from the start and has some superb performances. Glen Close appears later in the seasons and is great, as is Forest Whitaker.

Breaking Bad - fantastic drama and some of the finest acting on TV at the moment. The 4th season has just started in the US and there's going to be one more before they wrap it up, so you wouldn't get that 'complete' box set experience for a while, but IMO it's worth starting now.

I'm currently loving Sons of Anarchy, if you liked The Sopranos then it should be up your street.Road - http://www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=40044&t=12777154&p=16943702#p16943702

I think The Sopranos is the best thing ever to have been on tv and absolutely loved The West Wing. Brilliantly written. See if your local library has it. you could borrow it and give it a go. You may well be surprised.0

Just seen that you live in France so the library suggestion's just gone out the window ;-)0

'Treme'. Brilliant writing, great acting and an unconventional structure.
I was both suprised and impressed as I hadn't expected to like it.How would I write my own epitaph? With a crayon - I'm not allowed anything I can sharpen to a sustainable point.

Just to add a couple of older ones.
Deadwood - a taste of what living in the "wild west" was really like
Band of brothers

Breaking Bad was pretty good, I've only made it halfway through the second season though so can't comment on the rest of it.
Justified might be worth a look. The first two seasons have been fantastic and there's a third season on the way soon.0 -

+1 for Band of Brothers - best TV series I've ever watched.FTT

Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip - same director (Aaron Sorkin) and writers as the West Wing (my personal favourite show of all time), basically the same cast plus an excellent performance from Matthew Perry of Friends fame.
Much like the West Wing it won everything going while it was on.
Ridiculously addictive viewing.

Please also give the West Wing a go - its brilliant.
If you fancy a laugh: 30 Rock. Brilliantly written and acted. very, very funny. Again, won everything when it came out.

Thank you to everyone who's made a suggestion. Much appreciated & plenty of food for thought. We'll need something a bit more stimulating than dodgy French game shows & badly dubbed episodes of Friends once the Vuelta & Rugby World Cup are finished!Between me & Eddy Merckx we've won pretty much everything worth winning on a bike.0

Mad men bored the trunks clean off me. Made it a season and a half in. Not even the superb specimens that are January Jones and Christina Hendricks could keep me watching.0

+ for 30 Rock. I was stuck in bed with a nasty chest infection for a couple of weeks last year and watched about four seasons worth. I'm convinced it made me better (although that might have been the anti biotics).
Forgot to mention Fringe. I love Fringe. Walter Bishop is a brilliant character portrayed by the very excellent John Noble. Anna Torv is good in it too (rubs thighs).

Spooks? The first 3 series especially were shockingly violent, thought provoking and well acted0
