hey all, I'm new to both the forum and to bikes, basically I'm looking for a bike to get me fit and loose a few pounds ( a lot of pounds), I live not for from Glasgow so I believe I have the choice of a few trails close by plus I'll be using it to get to work and back everyday (5miles).
Here's the tricky bit I only have £350 -£400 MAXIMUM to spend, I don't fancy going down the second hand route as I don't know enough yet so would be worried incase I missed something and ended up buying something that would cost more in the long run, So can anyone help me out .
I've been looking for a few days now I have seen
Mongoose tyax elite 2011
Specialized Hardrock Sport Disc 2011
Carrera vengeance 2011
But that's not a final three or anything it's just a few I had picked out within my price range, I'm really wiling to look at any suggestions anyone might have, cheers guys

Was in the same boat last year and went for a 2010 tyax elite. Couldnt be happier really good spec for the money and looks bloody fantastic. Would advise to look at the blue 2010 model as i find the 2011 models don't look as nice. Could pick one up cheaper than the 2011 which will leave you abit of spare cash for accessories.0

Thanks for the reply.....I can get the 2011 for £350 and the cheapest I have seen the 2010 is £340 i don't know if it's just me being a noob but I can't see any real difference in the spec, I like the color of the 2011, I think it looks better when you actually see it than it does in the pics online. If it is purly color I think I would go for the 2011.
Anyone else got anything to throw into the mix?0 -
Ignore the Hardrock, truly awful bike for the money.
Take a look at the older Carrera Kraken - better than the Vengeance.

That's what I was going for first but they are sold out on the 20" frame and they don't know when or even if they are getting them back in.....0 -

I looked at that model a few days ago looked and felt great the only thing that put me off was the mechanical brakes compared to the hydraulics on the mongoose, this is were my total lack of experience comes into it. I don't know if because the bikes are so closely priced the brakes would probably be almost the same even though one is mechanical and one is hydraulic.0 -
The Tyax Elite at £340 is a very good bike ata very good price. Gets hydro brakes, but the Decathlon gets better gears. Both have damped forks which is essential.
Only problem is trying it for size.0 -
I've tried both well I've sat on both, to be fair I've sat on loads over the last 2 weeks, but to narrow it down to just the mongoose and the rockrider both felt great, what do you recommend better gears or better brakes to start with.......think it's going to be a toss of a coin ha
Thanks for your help so far0
