Any thoughts please?

I have a Stronglight 1in threaded headset, but it comes loose every 100 miles or so. I tighten the lockring up hard, but even so, by the end of ther week it will be loose again.

Cheers

Get some low strength (purple or blue) threadlock on it if it keeps coming undone.
  • Is the headset actually coming undone? Try painting on a simple mark across the thread / lockring to check. Hopefully the threadlock will do the trick anyway
  • Thanks gents - I'll try the Threadlock. I had no idea this product existed. :)

I've just done the same thing with some PTFE plumbers tape

Have you checked the condition of the threads on your fork, lock nut and bearing cup. From what i remember of the last threaded fork I had there was a washer with a tab on it that sat in a groove on the fork and prevented the lock nut from unscrewing. What might have happened is the nut has not been fully tightened and a hammering action occurred as you go over lumps and bumps, this can knock the peak off the thread and cause lock nut to slip.

That's my problem; the steerer lacks the groove for the tab on the locknut washer, so I have used a plain spacer instead. This is then free to rotate as you describe, and the locknut frees itself.

    So far, so good
