Hi guys, my xtr shifters have developed an annoying intermittent fault, they shift up no problem, however, shifting down sometimes it will only go down 1 gear.....! there is no uniformity to this fault. I have partially dismantled the shifted and cleaned it out as best I could with gt85, this left it looking like new, I couldn't see any obvious signs of wear on any of the components, has my shifted had it's day.......?

You need to explian this in a bit more detail - is the lever jamming? Or the chain not shifting after the lever is pressed?

if the shifter is operating as it should, then your cables may need cleaning/replacing

By shifting down, do you mean to a smaller cog or a larger one? If you actually mean shifting up (smaller cog) could be sticky cables.

I have XTR shifters (M970) and often have a problem shifting down on the font mech (outer to middle or middle to granny). I've opened it up and can see the release mechanism but it always works properly when there's no tension from the cable (next time I'll refit cable with the cover off :?).

Sometimes I can get it to work by shifting down instantly after shifting up, or by tapping the shifter while pushing the release lever.
  • sorry, its happening when i shift to a smaller cog, the xtr's allow two gear changes in this direction, sometimes i get two and other times i only get one. the shifter is only clicking once when i get one shift and twice when i get two shifts, this would suggest to me that the problem is not the cable.....

IMO this sounds like a cable/outer problem

if you are shifting to larger cogs fine but having problems moving to smaller cogs, and from what you said your shifter is working fine, then your issue is cable/outer/both

I agree, cables. Replace or clean, service, recut and oil.
  • ok guys, i have now replaced the inner and outer cables and i still have the problem........!
  • sorted, despite lots of intence cleaning i missed a small piece of hard muck lodged in my rear mech....
