Will these tyres last?

I'm looking at buying the Schwalbe Extremo ZX tyre in black and white and I went to purchase them at lunch and the guy in the shop said they wouldn't be good for long distances so back to the drawing board
I am cycling to Amsterdam and I will carry with me replacement tyres. I am unsure whether these tyres are going to be really that suitable. I really wanted a great tyre that is a white... prepared to pay for the quality and style.
What would you say? Just go for the tyre?

I'd say "white = shite" personally, but hey, everyone has different tastes. And if you don't mind risking punctures from using a lightweight race tyre go for it.
Otherwise I'd get some 23mm Michelin Krylion Carbons while you can. Reasonably fast, reasonably durable.0 -
That's fair enough. I just wanted a decent white style tyre with good wear and that others recommend.

I'd go for the ultremos, it's only 300 miles and as such you'd be unlucky to puncture them.
I probably wouldn't even bother with spares, just take a couple of tyre boots as they're a lot lighter.0 -
Vittoria Rubino Pro 3

Great mix of performance (150TPI and slick centre track) yet tough as anything out there. I've ridden a pair for 2 winters (many many miles) with only 1 puncture.
Very, very good price too.0 -
I currently have the stock tyres on a Specialised Roubaix SL3 which are two 'Specialized Roubaix Pro II' tyres. How do these compare?I'm cycling 300 miles to Amsterdam on 15th -18th September to raise £1,200 for SCOPE. If you would like to sponsor me, please visit my blog http://www.carl2amsterdam.com0

Don't agree. I have ridden a pair of Ultremos!! for over 2,000KMs since March all over Surrey's less than perfect lanes. Two punctures from thorns and glass but they show few signs of wear and are a great ride in terms of comfort and grip.0 -
If they're new tyres then punctures shouldn't be a problem. They will wear quite quickly but you'll get good grip and much better feel.
300 miles is not long distance in tyre terms, only in single ride terms...- - - - - - - - - -

1000 miles on my Ultremo ZX's too and only one puncture - and that was a pinch flat after i forgot to check tyres pressure that morning. Cracking tyre (won the recent Cycling Plus review) and on offer at Ribble for £52 a pair with 2 inner tubes included0 -
As good as Ultremo's are i wouldn't want to ride them far in anything but sunny climes and the occasional shower. I wouldn't rely of them if i wasn't returning home after every ride.
On another note, Specialized tyres have a reputation for being distinctly poor. That is by their own admission too. They're nowhere near the market forerunners such as Vittoria, Veloflex, Michelin and Continental.
I don't trust Conti for my own (relatively) irrational reasons, Schwalbe have a history of unreliability and/or mediocrity, I haven't ridden Michelin tyres (although their tubes are the best) and i've never, ever had a problem with Vittoria and happen to think they ride fabulously.
Vredestein are also worth a look. I rode LE-JOG on a pair of Fortezza Tricomp models with no punctures. Equally my two riding partners had zero punctures on their Vittoria's. We had about 50% heavy rain 30% baking sun and 20% cloudy. So they went through the extreme's of British weather.0 -
I toured across Spain and Italy on Rubino Pro 3 Slicks (25mm). In fact, I did about 3000 miles on them with no punctures. Have recently replaced with Michelin Krylion Carbons, as I couldn't find 25mm Rubinos. Also fine so far...0

Yes - stop being scared of having a bad experience and go for the tyres you want. Spending too much time worrying is worse for you than not choosing the absolute best tyre.CAPTAIN BUCKFAST'S CYCLING TIPS - GUARANTEED TO WORK! 1 OUT OF 10 RACING CYCLISTS AGREE!0
