Started a thread here about should I / shouldn't I get into this biking thing....
Decided its definitely a good thing and I will. So went to On Your Bike at London Bridge to have a chat with them about what I should look for in a bike and they basically laughed me out the store when I said I wanted to spend about £600 and gave me the impression that for that price I'd have to get an aluminium fork which would be so bad that my head would vibrate until it fell off. I presumed he was talking bollocks.
From looking on the web I've spotted a few options...
- Scott Speedster S55
- Specialized Allez Triple
- Giant Defy 4
- Trek 1.1
Like the idea of the Scott as I live on a farm and the road home is a bit shit and thought its 'all weather' aspirations may be of use.
Anything else worth a look?
Was considering the Govt Cycle scheme & its 40% offer but looks like I'd have to pay a fair old lump sum after 18 months to actually become owner of the bike so will probs just go with one of the 0% finance things on offer.
Any help would be great, can then go snooping round more shops on Saturday.

All the above are probably decent bikes and offer reasonable value for money. Don't be afraid of looking at a used bike though; something with a higher spec and a few hundred miles on it could offer greater value. You could do worse than invest in a copy of Cycling Weekly magazine (£2.75 every Thursday) and scan through the Classifieds for some potentially good machines, or ebay if you know what you want. My favourite bike (of 6 that I own - sad I know) is a Cube Aerial bought for £599.99 online at Chain Reaction - fantastic value, Ally frame with Carbon Forks - all I did initially was upgrade the saddle for 50 quid. Don't be fooled by an unhelpful local bike shop or retailer - you can buy a lot of bike for £600 if you do the research. Good luck and welcome to the club!Raymondo

You can pick up a Giant Defy 2 for under £ 600 at the moment, never mind a 40

Indeed - I got mine from here:

I thought they gave pretty good service and I'd recommend them. £569 seems a good price too.0 -
I was looking at about this price range about a year or so ago. For me it was between the Specialized Allez Sport 18 (think that was what it was called, if I remember rightly it had mostly Tiagra group and carbon forks etc) or the Ribble 7005 Race.
I went for the Ribble 7005 Race, I think they're still less than £600, they have full Tiagra groupset BB, cassette, to cranks, chainrings, front, rear mech, brakes, shifters everything...) and half decent Pro Lite wheels... Go to Ribble website and look up special edition bikes...Do not write below this line. Office use only.0 -
....Oh and carbon fork...Do not write below this line. Office use only.0

My last road bike was a 7005 Ribble Carbon Monostay frame, with Tiagra Group, Xero XR-1 wheels, Vittoria Rubino Pro Tyres, ITM finishing kit, flite saddle, Upgraded rear mech and cassette to Ultegra (got a slightly used absolute bargain). Loved it and should never have got rid. But that was about 5 years ago now I have just realised.
I built it up myself over a couple of months.
My Defy 2 arrived today, this is it straight out of box after whacking the front wheel on. Not adjusted and still with bell and whistles (ok reflectors) fitted lol

Went and had a look at some today. Like the look of the Defy 2 and the Secteur.
DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE I CAN GET A GIANT DEFY 2 58cm ONLINE FOR £600?!
Only seems to be XS & S available at the bargain basement price.
Can't afford to pay in lump sum so getting one online on a 0% finance scheme is only way I can afford it.
Anyone got any tips thatd be great. Can also goto a shop in Surrey area if they do this service.Canyon AL Ultimate 9.00 -
I found a few shops selling them for under the £600 when I was looking (I paid £520 for mine)
You may well be out of luck now though having looked about. People have had 2011 bikes on offer for a few weeks now, and people have been snapping up whats left.0 -
I recently got a Specialized Allez Sport 27 as my first road bike for just over £600 and I'm over the moon with it.0
