Why did Mafac brakes fall out of favour......

Hoping my memory is not playing tricks here, but weren't Mafac brakes pretty good. The cantilever bit teamed with universal levers was the bees knees (Showing my age there!)... I know road cyclists are a touch fashion conscious, was it just that?
I have Campag record on my bike at the moment and they don't strike me as that much better, indeed if as good.

Any product that actually works iand lasts is bound to be forced out of the market.

Although I can't speak with authority (having never ridden Mafac nor Campag Record brakes), I would say that fashion is the biggest killer of otherwise good ideas. Some examples:

Pants replaced by boxers
Zips replaced by buttons
Soap replaced by shower gel
Blood, sweat and tear replaced by cheating with drugs (while it was fashionable for a while)

I've never had much luck with the mafac brakes. Dual pivot every time IMO.

I have Mafac centre pull callipers on the SS. They work but moderm dual pivot designs are far, far better.
