Adjusting Travel on Reba RLT 2010

Hi

I have Reba RLT 2010 100 mm travel forks. I would like to adjust the travel to 120 mm. I have read the manual and now know how to service them and adjust the travel internally. I am unsure, however, if in 100 mm set up they have a removable 20 mm internal spacer in place. They don't need serviced for a good while yet, so I don't really want to dismantle unless I know they can definitely be adjusted to 120 mm.

So, does anyone know whether these forks in 100 mm set up feature a 20 mm spacer?

Thanks

in a word no as it depends on what they are. OE came with the bike. OE bought "grey" or Aftermarket.

  • Aftermarket. Genuine part from Merlin Cycles.

so it cam in a RS box with manual, stickers etc .then it should be an all travel fork and you should have a spare mm spacer to reduce it to 80mm if you want.

  • It did come with the spacer for adjusting to 80mm. Don't recall if it was in a RS box. Came with extra stickers and pop-lock. Did not have the full manual that is available online, just the very slim booklet that explains the basic features.

EDIT - But does it currently have a removable 20mm spacer that can be taken out to give 120mm rather than 100mm travel?

No way to know until you open them up and look I am afraid.
  • Thanks Niclouse and Supersonic - I guess I'll just have to bite the bullet and disassemble, or wait until they are in need of a service.

Voodoo - Did you happen to find this out? I have the same problem, pretty sure i bought 100/120 forks from Merlin and they are set to 100 right now but want to push them up to 120. Again not due a service so would love to avoid an un-needed strip down.

As above, no way to tell unless you pull the lowers off and take the air spring out.
  • Haven't serviced yet so don't know. Will post an update when I have found out. That said, yours might be different.
  • I have a set of older Reba SL that came off a Giant XC.They were origianlly set to 85mm but I took a spacer out to get 100mm.Theres still a apacer in there too if I wanted 115.

Once youv` read the RS guide, and watched the video,it is actually quite straightforward to do.Only problem I had was remembering to first let the air out of the negative chamber first.

Once I`d overcome that it was pretty much plain sailing.

+1 be brave its not difficult to do. Plus you'll be amazed how quickly the oil turns to poo.

Researching this for myself. I wonder if the OP can tell us how he got on.

Mine were sold to me from Merlin, (RS box, stickers, etc etc) as 120mm forks but only have 100mm travel at the moment.

There are sag guides for 3 separate travel amounts so I'm confident the forks can go to 120mm they just have this 'spacer' in them at the moment.

I'm not good with taking bits apart, and having just spent quite a bit of cash on the forks I don't really want to incur another cost by taking them apart and fouling them up.

For the record, they work great. Just been to Brenin and they coped admirably and I weight 17stone, probably wouldn't even notice the extra 20mm but it's in my head now and I want it!

I did to my forks, was easy enough to do just take your time. If you look on the RS web site it tells you all the things you will need, you dont need to do a full strip just pop the lowers off, take the non drive side damper out, take of the spacer and reassemble.

I had serviced my forks before so i had all the things i needed, i dont think i needed fluid or if i did it was a tiny amount. but you do need some of the various grease they suggest using.

I definately noticed the extra 20mm but i only changed it when i swaped to a frame that suited more travel.

I would do it while you still have time to get your money back if they are not 120s

Thanks for the info. It seems the general opinion is that some sort of oil or grease will likely need replacing or topping up if the forks are dismantled. This is what puts me off lol

Fork oil, get to a motorbike shop and by some, grease, get to a bike hop and buy some, a basic service on a fork is really rather easy, each step in itself is simple, just follow the steps.

Even if you buy the stuff from chain reaction it's only going to cost you £20 and then you have everything you need to services for your forks or a few years. Doing a lower fork service keeps them feeling good.

Thanks for not writing 'MTFU', it must have been tough to stop yourselves!!

I've got an afternoon to myself tomorrow, I'll take pics and do a walkthrough, it's what I'd like to see so i'm sure it'll help someone.

    Google "Rule 5" :)

The RS manual has lots of pics and there are a bunch of youtube videos by rockshox that walk you through it also. And a few photo walkthroughs, one on Bikeradar and a couple on internet land if you google Rockshox service.
