As the title suggests im looking to get a new bike for woodland riding and a bit of commuting but with so many diffrent makes models and specs on offer i feel a bit lost. Iv seen a couple that i like the look of and have upto £1500 to spend, here are the ones iv seen that i think will do the job -

I could be well off the mark and missing a lot of things so if anyone has any other suggestions or can tell me what i should be looking for in a bike it would be really helpfull.

I can't give you any advice being a complete noob myself but if I had £1500 to spend on a new bike I'd be getting one of these delivered, pronto...

All of those are a lot of bike for commuting and woodland riding, especially the KHS and to a lesser extent the On-One.
That depends on exactly what 'woodland riding' involves of course but unless it's more technical than it sounds I wouldn't be looking at a full susser personally. You're just carting around extra weight/complexity you don't need.

Beyond that you can't really go wrong with the sort of 'proper' bikes (i.e. not Halfords specials) that you're looking at beyind fit and presonal preference, which is not something anyone can help you with really.
  • So would i be better looking at a hardtail then? i said woodland because it was the only word i could think of! lol theres a lot of woodland trials around my area and the yorkshire dales are about 20min drive away i was looking at doing ome of there trials aswell. Hope that explains things better.

What do your local shops sell?

The whyte would get my vote from the choices listed.
+1 supersonic, what bikes do your lbs sell? Before buying any bike you should be trying them for size and looking for a test ride.
Is your budget going to include all the accessories you will need like helmet, gloves, hydration pack, tools, tubes, waterproofs and winter riding gear?

If you live 20mins from the Dales then you are likely to get hooked and become a "proper" mountain biker, buy the best you can afford imo and enjoy

Go visit your local bike shops, come back with some choices for our opinions

I have mtb`ed for 20yrs or so
  • Hi guys thanks for the replys from whats been said it looks like the whyte is the one togo for both jejames in rotherham (20min away) and edingburgh cycle coop in leeds both sell whyte aswell as the usuall contenders of scott, specialised, trek etc so i will take your advice and go look at them this weekend and see if the whyte is suited to me and if not what else thay have that would be. On-one is also in rotherham so may pop in to have a look at the carbon 456 while im there.

Wheelbase are offering the Whyte 901 at a discounted price of £950 at the min, only £50 more than the 805 (much to my displeasure as I just forked out for the 805!).

Much upgraded model at a bargain price.

The 805 has been a sweet ride since I got it about a month ago, componentry is a bit "budget end" for this price bracket but the frame is very good, and that's the important bit as I will be upgrading as and when finances allow.

    Hope that helps
