How can I tell if my chain is too long?

My lbs replaced my chain a few weeks back and I think it's too long now. It definitely feels like it's slapping around more than it used to - but maybe my riding has changed and I'm throwing the bike round more as well.
Is there a quick, easy way to check chain length is correct?

I get the feeling the chain on my new Rumblefish is a bit too long.
Is it normal for the top part of the chain to have a bit of sag in it? The upper gap between the BB and the cassette? Obviously if I start pedalling the chain tightens but when I'm on the two smallest cogs the rear derailleur seems to be sprung as far back as it can to try to keep tension0 -

Confirmation of doing all maintenance myself from now onwards...
LBS put on a chain that's 3 links too long
What tools do I need to remove the additional links? It's a chain with a gold 'connector'(?) link in it."Why have that extra tooth if you're not using it?" - Brian Lopes

i have always just used a chain tool on my chain. if you pay more then a tenner for one i'd say ur being ripped off. some "bicycle" tools have one built in to them.

I think what phal44 means is when checking chain length as per Park Tools instructions - not whilst riding (I hope!)"Why have that extra tooth if you're not using it?" - Brian Lopes

Actually I was riding it :P Nobody ever told me that the direct opposite gears shouldn't be used. I had often wondered how they overcame the issues of allignment with those gears at the opposite ends... I guess they didn't lol0
