Hybrid bike with MTB chainset

In my opinion 95% of the bike sold these days are over geared.
Be that as it may, I have a friend who loves to cycle, but struggles with hills and luggage.
Her bike was stolen recently (despite being painted with flowers) and I thought she could do better with a hybrid but with mtb chainset.
I've spent a while looking but can't find one?
Can anyone else do better??
Any why is this lamentable state allowed to go on??
Advice/ comments/opinions welcome!

Absolutely spot-on.
But the cycle trade isn't headed by enlightened and far-sighted individuals that necessarily have the needs of the consumer in mind.
And bigger sprockets at the back is a cack-handed way of getting lower gears.
I use what might one day be known as a compact triple chainset - 26/34/42 - and an 11-23 cassette.
Your friend might want to consider a rigid-framed/forked mountain bike with 26" wheels. These bikes come with easy gears and you can get some fast 26" tyres these days.0 -
bikes are just a collection of bits.
Just adapt to suit.
Either fit a MTB chainset, LH shifter and front mech to your hybrid, or
