Wet/Mud/Winter Tyres

I was almost set on buying Nobby Nics until i read a thread further down which had a lot of people recommending Bontranger Mud-X's. Will me as a beginner notice a lot of difference in grip/weight etc or is one just a totally better tyre? My budget is £20 a tyre so i'm still open to other options now. Thanks

voted other for Maxis Medusas Exceptions but think they're over budget.0

Yep they are but thanks anyways!
People do still seem to like the nics but I read somewhere that they don't corner well, is that true?0 -

It says the bontragers have a 'amarid bead'. I think it is still a folding tyre (correct me if I'm wrong?) but I've never heard of that bead before. Just out of interest, what's the difference between it and kevlar?0
-
Oh and this one - http://www.jejamescycles.co.uk/bontrage ... 16049.html - is tubeless for £19.99, and as far as I can see, this one is just folding - http://www.evanscycles.com/products/bon ... le#answers - for £24.99. I don't run tubeless and evans will price match so should i just buy from evans?
The only thing that confused me is I read a review here - http://www.bikeradar.com/gear/category/ ... yre-42772/ - and it says folding in the tyres name but describes it as tubeless later!0 -
Aargh  I just found this! http://www.evanscycles.com/products/bon ... gn=froogle Can someone please explain the difference! And which tyre the one from jejamescycles matches! Thanks :oops:0

Greer_, that last link you posted is for a 29" tyre, probably the wrong wheel size I'm assuming for what your after.
You can run tubes in tubeless tyres also, and (I think) aramid and kevlar are one and the same thing.
I've tried Nobby Nics and they're not bad in the gloop, no idea about the MudX but sounds good in the reviews0 -
That's just me being silly again  thanks to everyone trying to help! I'd be at a loss with me bike if it wasn't for this forum!0

Mud-X's, I like riding in allot of mud and rain and have found these tyres to shed the mud well and grip well. Wet roots not so well but then again what tyre can actually grip wet roots? Mud-X's dont wear down that quick either as long as you dont use them on the road. Nobby Nics for X-country, dry/ slightly wet weather.
But this is just my opinion :shock:0 -
Mud-X, by a very wet, dirty, claggy, country mile. They bite through the clag to give more grip than most, they shed the mud incredibly well, roll ok, the 2.0 size fills out quite nicely.Trail fun - Transition Bandit

Did not vote as I have not used any of them yet. But I have just ordered some mud X from Evens. Priced matched the this site so £18.50 and free postage.

Mud X is good but I find narrow mud tyres pinch too easily but that is probably made worse because I'm quite heavy (15.5 stone)
I prefer Bontrager XR4 2.2, works in all conditions for me, had them on for over a year now.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350 -

Have found one site selling them for about £9 - seems too good to be true!!0 -

Once youve got them, and ridden them, come back and tell us what you think of them. We're all biased obviously!A Flock of Birds

Car park poll last night, the first night just about everyone had changed to winter tyres (in f**king August!!!).
Bontrager MudX - 50%
Panaracer Trailraker - 50%
(That's 8 pairs each. Two of us hadn't changed!).Trail fun - Transition Bandit

Fat tyres normally give more protection than skinny tyres, apart from that threads and rubber compound used would decide the effectiveness of the tyre on XC trail. The pattern of thread directly influence the speed of the wheel and inversely proportional to grip choice of the tyre. Low thread will increase the agility. Maxxis high roller is far better tyre and still popular for its sturdy built quility. I voted for other tyres.0
