Need 1 1/4" stem for a CANYON - help!

Hmmmm
Im mostly pleased with my Canyon despite a small degree of aggravation
However I have eventually realised that the standard 110mm stem is too long, this despite me being 6 1" and never having ridden anything less than 130mm before
I have missed the opportunity to swap it for another one for free however Canyon will sell me a Ritchey for more than I can buy it for locally plus shipping on top of their quoted price
The problem is its a non standard size and only they seem to be able to sell it to me as I actually cant in fact buy it locally in 1 1/4" - or anywhere else for that matter
(Its a regular looking Ritchey WCS 4 Axis)
Am I missing anything here?
All I can find online is a Syntace which I cant find in stock, an old S-Works stem which again I cant get hold of and thats it
Is 1 1/4" really that unique?
Cheers

You might be able to find a suitable shim.0

Is it a carbon steerer or aluminium? If it's alu, an older FSA-120 may work. http://www.bikeradar.com/gear/category/components/stem/product/review-fsa-os-120-stem-35143/
The stem itself is 1 1/4 but it comes with a shim for 1 1/8 - aimed at 1 1/8 carbon steerers (as the shim prevents point-loading the carbon).
Just to annoy you - I bought one unused for £25 - turned up yesterday.
This lot seem to have one:

Missed the opportunity?
I'm curious because emailed the UK rep and he replaced mine for the price of postage on the condition that the original was in saleable condition i.e. perfect. Has your been damaged? Euqally that may not be standard practice but if he offered it to me, he should offer it to everyone.
1 1/4 is really quite rare but what really matters is warranty and design. Warranty is obvious but design is key because the carbon steerer may be susceptible to brakeage with alternative stem clamp designs. But then you're back to warranty if something does go wrong.
And Berk, yet again, wrong. You can't 'shim' something to be bigger. :roll:0 -
^^^^^ yes I missed the opportunity
I could have swapped it within 30 days but have waited a fair bit longer
The reason being I just couldnt believe I would need anything as short as 100mm and so have fiddled with absolutely everything to do with position and contact points until eventually realising that I do
It would help if I could buy something locally, but it seems I have to buy from them at a pretty steep mark up plus postage from Germany as its a unique size
Dont get me wrong the bikes fine and the price was superb
But this in conjunction with some other initial problems makes me realise buying mail order comes at a price
Although the price of anther expensive stem, a Dura-ace cable at 20 pounds and a scratched frame when it spat my chain off on the first shift probably still make it a good buy
Probably

Yes ... getting my Imperial measures mixed up.
Seen as the new tapered steerer size is more of a Giant thing than a Canyon thing, I would expect to see some Giant stems with 31,8 stem clamps on the after-sales market sooner or later.0 -
@I am the god of hell fire
I've the opposite problem. I really need a 100mm replacement stem, but may be interested in buying yours if you're interested...0 -
oh yes - whats your story??
I have a 110mm Canyon Ritchey which has been 'used' in so much as its been attached to my bike for approx 3 months and ridden up Alpe d'Huez in the meantime
What happened to yours?
Im assuming you have a Canyon with the 1 1/4" stem that only they use and only they sell?
I am waiting for a quote from them on P&P for a shorter replacement before deciding on buying or not, however if I do then I will have a stem which is of no use to over 99% of the biking community so would be happy to consider a deal if youre OK with 110mm
I like the bike, but having a poorly fitted mech which left my frame damaged plus the cost of a replacement Dura-ace cable for one which was again not fitted properly (which Canyon wouldnt refund) makes me reluctant to spend more money with them, especially at monopoly prices!
Cheers

Just checked the site and you can buy the FSA for 50 euros.0 -
I bought frame only which shipped with a 90mm stem. Was half expecting to need to change length at some point, but never really dawned on me that the 1 1/4 stems could not be bought from somewhere else. Canyon's offer for a new one is 75EUR+shipping.
I'm reluctant to use the FSA stem. There are some postings about damage being caused to the Canyon steerer due to the fact that there is a gap between the fixings. The assertion is that when tightened, it does not spread the load so evenly hence causing damage.
110mm may be a tad too long but if you do sell let me know and am sure we could work something out - you can send me a private message i think from profile page

Just noticed from the Tour of flanders bikes on bikeradar that the giants use 'giant contact od2' stems. you can get these for £60-70 in the UK. Not that cheap, but a solution none the less0
-
Just very small chance but is there anybody who have Canyon v13 110 stem ?? I would be able to buy off or exchange for 130 mm0

There's loads on eBay!

go on ebay, search for '1/4 stem' or 'canyon stem' loads of people end up in your situation and sell the ones they don't need.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ritchey-WCS-4 ... Sw4shX37ba there's one.
Only Canyon and Giant use 1 1/4" steerers I think and only on the higher end carbon models, so yeah, it's fairly unique.0
