Recovery Rides

Did my first 45 today, glad with it but wanted to do more...Bonked!! Anyway, what would a recovery ride look like for this, and when would I do it? The 45 had a few big hills in, only 1 which I thought I died on! My average was just under 16mph, not the best but looking to improve.
So Basically, what distances, speeds, times do i want to be doing for a recovery ride? and when?

    I dont think they're a necessity to be honest - but its more like just spinning the legs out the next day. So lower gearing, not too much effort, but a decent cadence. No more than 45 mins or so I'd think.

    Wouldn't worry about speed or times, just stay in the small ring for around 45-60 mins.
