Avoid floating rotors. Often give problems for no real benefit.

    Exactly!!

I've just fitted Superstars 180mm rear & 203mm front floating rotors to my Trance and, apart from a slight initial rubbing on the rear brake mount, they fitted easily and worked very well on last night's ride.

I can't tell whether it's the floating part of the rotors that has made a difference because I up-sized from 160mm rear & 180mm front, but they're certainly more powerful.

Of course that could be just because of the size but they definitely didn't squeal (which I guess was due to over-heating) like my old ones did on long, steep descents.

I also agree with the earlier post - they certainly add some bling as well as functionality!!

Please explain why we should avoid them :D

I'm not 100% on this but i think i remember reading that the DT swiss adapters weren't suitable for floating rotors...

From my experince apart from aesthetics floating rotors offer no benefit.

Depending on the design, they can develop play, although most people who use them have no problems. In theory they won't warp as easily, as they have room to expand. It won't make them any more or less powerful.

In my opinion, if you like the look of them, buy some.

Certain combinations of frame/fork and calliper and hub will mean that the rotor will rub, some worse than others. It's all a gamble basically.
And for the guy who stepped up from 160 to 180 rotors, the fact that they're floating doesn't increase brake power AT ALL - but the size of the rotor does.

If you want pretty rotors get normal ones and paint the spider.
    Otherwise what Yeehaa said.

    Well...

    A) They often cause compatibilty probs (hence this post)

    B) Lighter all in one rotors are available

    C) The above can be got cheaper

    D) Warping very rarely happens

    E) The rivets wear out.

However some think they look nice.

Bought one as they looked pretty. Binned it and got a regular one a few weeks later as I'd warped it and it was rubbing like a bastard. Look nice, but pretty pointless really.

  • +1 for pointless debate.

Look pretty, dont add any notable performance increase, clearance issues, rivets wear loose, constant rubbing ensues.
    Regular rotors for the win.
